Agreed, though I bet you've beaten McFly on movie watching. Being on an oil rig an all.

Ha, they watch movies on thursday night offshore. other than that, they keep the 1 tv locked onto foxnews.
I'm too busy at the house (pregnant wife and a 2 year old, plus being gone 21 days and having to catch up on housework) to watch any movies. the wife and i are going to see horrible bosses on saturday. it's her birthday and she wants dinner and a movie.

Yeah,we have basic $15/month cable - only like 10 channels, so movies is basically all that we watch....I think 4.5 - 6 hours or so of movies/TV per week is very low..I would guess considering sports on tv and other shows, most people probably watch 3-5 hours per day, easy. Most sites say the average american watches 28 hours per week.Commander of Awesome;828223 wrote:Holy shit, thats a lot of time spent in front of the TV..... 3-4 movies during the summer?!! I'd reckon even the commander of awesome watches more then 6 hours of TV/Movies per week in this glorious summer weather.
We have an 11 month old who goes to sleep at 8pm, so it's something to do other than buttsecks.

I just finally got on Summer break today for six weeks -- I'll probably keep my subscription through August then cancel when I go back to school. Really, the ONLY thing I want, is to have new release DVDs available to me when they come out, and neither Redbox nor Netflix offers that. I don't need to stream TV shows or old movies or want DVDs after they've been out for a month already. There's a Family Video about a mile from my work. They offer one-night rentals for about $2.50. Considering I watch 4-6 movies a month, it'll be cheaper than Netflix's bullshit. I'm sick of them jacking up prices and offering the same garbage.

When does this take place? My June billing was 11.99- steaming and 1 out at a time. My next bill date is July 26. Will the new prices be in effect by then?

I'm going to abuse the hell out of it for the next month and a half and then cancel. Watch movies the day they get in and ship them back immediately. I bet I could burn through 10-12 movies in a month.

I really only use the streaming service anyway. When I do get a movie in the mail it usually sits around for up to a week before we even watch it.
So I'll just switch to the streaming only service.

My friend does the 3 out at a time for a month, and burns all 3 in a day and ships them back. Gets about 25-30 movies a month and watches them on his burned DVDs and then starts Netflix again

That's near the start of football season. Expect this family to bail on Netflix in late August.

Sounds like Netflix went to the JJHuddle school of business. (How do destroy something that's thriving)

What program do you use to rip and then burn?

I read something the other day that said Netflix hit a cap in its Sony (I think) contract for the number of streams or something and it essentially (as I understand it) voided their previous deal. Now, given that the deal was signed a few years ago before streaming skyrocketed and now the market has more players plus the movie companies have their own capabilities, Netflix lost its sweet deal. They are about to have something similar happen with Disney. Netflix is about to get gouged.
It sucks as a Netflix customer, but I don't think they have much choice. I don't remember the exact numbers, but there was also a blurb about how many of these contracts are going to be coming up for companies playing the movie game and Netflix's on-hand cash is like pennies compared to others (Google was mentioned). I would guess that unless they get back out in front with some crazy new concept, they'll be done in a matter of a few years.
EDIT: This explains it much better: http://money.cnn.com/2011/07/08/technology/netflix_starz_contract/index.htm?iid=EL
Pachter predicts Netflix's streaming content licensing costs will rise from $180 million in 2010 to a whopping $1.98 billion in 2012.
When streaming video was new, Netflix was able to secure contracts with the likes of Warner Bros. Studios and MTV to license big TV and film catalogues for about $5 million to $10 million per year. This time around, Pachter says, those costs could increase more than tenfold.
Netflix (NFLX) had a $161 million profit last year on sales of $2.2 billion, and it ended last quarter with $342 million in cash on hand.
But Netflix's rivals have much bigger wallets. At the end of the first quarter, Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) had almost $7 billion in cash, and Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) had a whopping $37 billion.

No complaints here. I never fell onto the bandwagon.
I'll stick with my $5 DVDs.

I just switched from streaming only last week. Guess I'll be making the switch back in a month.
I might just drop it altogether though.

So what about the people who already have a Netflix membership and are paying a lower rate? Will they be "grandfathered" in?
