Agreed, A1 is nothing more than glorified ketchup, it gained popularity through (i) great marketing and (ii) the proliferation of cheap steakhouses....York's, Ponderosa, Bonanza that needed the sauce to disguise the lack of quality.

That said, if someone enjoys it, let them enjoy it. I'd disgust many scotch drinkers by putting coke in a drink.
