Longhorn isn't a decent steakhouse which is where the OP was.
Sure, ask for A1 at a Ruth's Chris or any other fancy steakhouse and you'll offend them. And rightfully so.
This coming from someone who won't put A1 on even a shitty steak.

But why should we give a shit if we "offend" them. Youre the customer. You can ask for whatever you want!!

Like I said, you can also throw your cutlery on the floor and eat with your hands. Just because you are a paying customer and have the "right" to do something doesn't mean it isn't a breach of etiquette and make you look like a low-class prole. Whether you care about that is up to you.

I just had this happen today...
On groupon a few months ago I bought a deal for 5 car washes at a car wash in Toledo...Haven't used them yet and they expire in August, so my wife and I stopped by there today to get a wash.
We pull up, roll down the window and present the groupon to the cashier...She say "ok, would you like to use one of your washes today?".
WTF? No, I wanted to show you my cool groupon printout for a free car wash and then actually pay for a wash instead.

If it is offensive to a cook, that someone would ask for A-1, then all the restaurant needs to do, is not carry it. So that if someone ask for it, the waitress can simple say, "No, we dont carry that, our steak can stand on its own." But you better also not order that side of mushrooms and onions, that may add flavor to the steak.
Also, if the waitress is running to the cook, and saying that someone just asked for A-1 sauce, then she deserves to get upper cut in her kunt.

I ordered the steak in this instance medium. Based on previous experience at this same joint I know there medium has a couple of dry or overcooked spots in it. And medium rare at this particular venue is far too rare. So I dipped a couple of end pieces of the steak in some A-1 Sauce. That certainly doesn't make me a social dunce.
And just because a place has "steakhouse" in the title of their restaurant doesn't necessarily qualify them as a steakhouse. Places like this don't always have trained experienced chefs tending the cooking process. While Longhorn serves above average cuts of meat for a decent price it isn't the first place that comes to mind when thinking about a steak that can stand on its own merits.

I have been to Peter Lugar's in New York which is about as fine as a steakhouse in the country (I would argue it is the best). Lo and behold what do they have sitting on the table at their establishment? Steak sauce!
Have also seen it at St. Elmo's in Indy, the Precint and Jeff Ruby's in Cincinnati, Mitchell's, Hyde Park, etc.
