Agreed. You can ask for A1 at an Applebees, but if you're actually at a decent place, it's certainly a faux pas and borderline offensive to request A1.

Do you eat a burger plain? So you dont miss out on the taste?

That's fine--it's your call, and you can do whatever you want, including ordering a well-done steak with A1, wearing flip-flops into a nice restaurant, and sporting some jorts to a wedding. Heck, who needs cutlery to eat? Just grab that steak with your bare hands and tear it up like a man!

Your life; your call.

lol, don't be so dramatic. Serious question though. I don't know what type of field you work in or intend to work in, but if you were to go to dinner with a potential boss, current boss, or a client at some top of the line steak house, would you ask for A-1 sauce?

I don't think that was his point. A lot of life is how you present yourself, and ordering a well done steak with A1 sauce at a top steakhouse is an easy way to come off as unprofessional and immature. It's a small thing, sure, but I know for me, when you are trying to sway a client, you'd better suck it up and skip the the A1 sauce.

Ha if you're going cheap than A1 is the way to go because it makes a cheap piece of steak decent. However if you man up and buy a solid piece of meat all it needs is seasoning and maybe some worcestershire sauce on it while grilling

You're not a lesser person. You're just not as concerned about rules of social etiquette. I don't how much that matters to you, but it matters to a lot of people (bosses, clients, etc.). Your call on whether the trade-off is worth it--it's no skin off my back if you don't care about etiquette.

You can argue that etiquette is stupid and doesn't matter, and that's your opinion. But you can't really argue that ordering A1 at a decent steakhouse isn't a breach of etiquette.

Yes, because its not a nice place or a nice cut of meat. If meat is good and done right, it doesn't need extra flavor. By requesting extra flavor, one suggests to the cook that either he's cheap and can't buy a good cut of meat, or that he can't cook and screwed it up. Either way is offensive.

I think my question was dumb enough to be considered rhetorical.

yea I dont really see/understand it. I'm a very picky eater and like a lot of my food one way, and only that way. I don't deviate too much. I just dont get how eating what you like shows poor social etiquette. Let alone be compared to eating with your bare hands and dressing poorly for weddings haha. You can still taste the meat even if you have sauce on it. Just adds flavor.
