CLEVELAND — Cleveland Indians rookie third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall will be examined for a concussion or possible other damage after being hit by a pitch in the right side of his face.

Chisenhall left in the second inning of the Indians’ 5-4 victory over Toronto on Thursday night after being struck by an 0-1 pitch from right-hander Carlos Villanueva.

“He will see a specialist tomorrow,” Indians manager Manny Acta said after Cleveland rallied for five runs in the ninth inning.

“The ball hit his cheekbone and the area around his eye is swollen,” Acta said.

Chisenhall tried to duck out of the way, but the pitch struck him squarely, near the ear flap on his batting helmet with two outs and none on. He never lost consciousness, and was bent over as Acta and trainer Lonnie Soloff ran out of the dugout to check on him.

He got to his feet and walked off, holding a towel to his nose and cheek area.

Villanueva said he was upset by the incident.

“I feel really bad about that,” he said. “I wasn’t even trying to go up and in. I just flew open (in his delivery) a little bit. I hope he’s OK.”

Villanueva said he would try to visit with Chisenhall sometime during the weekend series.

Chisenhall hit his first career homer Wednesday night in a 5-3 win over the New York Yankees.

Chisenhall, the Indians’ No. 1 draft pick in 2008, missed time earlier this year at Triple-A Columbus with a concussion, sustained while sliding.
