Now hear me out. The NCAA committee will rule in August 2011 or around that time on what the punishment will be for Ohio State. I'm thinking a loss of a scholarship or two and the vacating of the 2010 season(minus the bowl game because the players were ruled eligible).

Anyway, after the NCAA rules, wouldn't it be a great idea to bring back the best coach in the country? I think it'd be a big ol' FU to the NCAA and their ridiculous rules, and Tressel would go back to what he does best, winning championships.

Thoughts?

You're living in a dream-land. Even if the NCAA doesn't come down hard on OSU, there's no way they would rehire Tress. You're also nuts if you think OSU is only going to lose a scholarship or two.

unless fickell does really well this season (1 loss at most, not including bowl game), I want urban.

If OSU is allowed to go to a bowl.

I'm not sold on Urban. I know his Ohio roots and all, but personally would like to see Fickell succeed.

This is the only coaching job I think Tress would consider.

Unless someone has actual proof of a lot more than has come out at this point -- the NCAA would be reaching mightily if they give OSU any kind of punishment that includes a bowl ban or loss of scholarships. That level of rule breaking just isn't there, from what I can see.

I would say they'll end up vacating all of 2010 (except the bowl game) and the suspensions will stand. The primary violation here was what JT did, and he's gone now. Any punishment they might have doled out to him (limited time recruiting, etc.) is moot.

EDIT TO ADD: whether they realize it or not, the loss of Tressel will end up being a much worse punishment long-term for OSU than loss of scholarships or a ban.

Losing scholarships here doesnt make sense. It doesn't go along with punishment from other cases like this. I expect to forfeit last season, except the bowl, and a 1 year bowl ban.

I think they'll be sanctions and possible vacating of victories, but I don't believe losses of scholly's will be severe--just a gut feeling

I agree but I think the NCAA will want to use what appears to be relatively modest rule breaking as an opportunity to send a message for programs across-the-board to clean-up their acts. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some scholarship losses and a one season ban on bowl games is implemented.

on the other side of the coin, The OSU is a $$$ machine, and a lot of people pay a lot of money to watch them play in bowls...just sayin'

If they do that, then every big time program from now on out will stop self-reporting and figure it doesn't pay. If you're going to get hammered, just to make a point, then why self report and follow the rules? May as well just go along and act like nothing is wrong until someone actually proves something outside of the internal reporting system.

Ohio State has been a team player in any NCAA investigation, and they've been the most active school at reporting even the most minor infractions.

Other schools know this. So if they see the NCAA hammering one that cooperates, there's zero incentive for them to cooperate in the future.

If the NCAA does make an example of Ohio State, I say fuck them, let's just play the game like the SEC schools do and let the chips fall where they may.

I agree, one of the worst organizations in the land will make an example of OSU.

How can you call him the best coach in the country? There are many coaches with similar records and have not been in trouble before or at least have not been caught.

Wolford has us 2-3 years away from a title. I would welcome Tressel back at YSU to raise some serious finances for the athletic department.... on the WATTS Center, the new sports complex across from Stambaugh, and potentially a baseball stadium on campus one day.
