Have had this discussion with a few people. If athletes were paid a small amount of what these colleges are making off of them, would this eliminate what has happened at OSU and oher schools?

What is the point of amateur athletics? Don't all D1 athletes get a stipend now? I had some college roommates who were on the hockey team and I'm pretty sure they got a stipend for living expenses. How is that different than paying players?

They already get a stipend for living expenses, free tuition, free room and board, priority registration, access to tutoring in any subject that they want for free, excellent medical care. I would say they do alright for their 20 hours a week for playing a game.

if you pay the star QB, you have to pay the gymnasts, the tennis players, etc.--so the answer is no

They already get money. I guess the argument is should they get more?

Plus each of them can get a college loan for living expenses if they don't have enough money, no?

Let's be honest though, they're blowing cash on tats, alcohol, marijuana, and girls like a lot of college kids. The difference is most college kids have loans for their food, housing, and education too, so I have no pity for "poor" college athletes.

Well, Ohio State football players are given a $1000 a month stipend so I'm not exactly sure it eliminated anything.

Is that different than other schools? I can't imagine the NCAA would give the schools to much room for variation of the stipends.

If someone feels entitled to scam the system for more, no amount is going to be enough. If Pryor were given another $500 or $1000 a month, does anything really think he would have done things differently in terms of abusing the system?

They are already given a hefty stipend, they don't need any more. This is the dumbest subject in college sports.

I'm guessing it's in accordance with some sort of formula that takes into account cost of living. To me it wouldn't make much sense for OSU athletes to get as much as USC athletes when the cost of living is much higher in LA than Columbus.

If it can be proven that the university is making money off their name/person/etc. (ie - jersey sales) then I think that part of those profits should be held until their amateur status is removed.

The reality is the polar opposite, IMO. The players acquire "a name" because of the program, not vice-versa.This year "Pryor", next year "Miller". The program doesn't miss a beat.

Most jerseys numbers are used multiple times. How do you prove the player that the jersey was sold for?

You think Cam Newton needed Auburn's "program" to acquire a "name?"

What the hell was he a year ago? Nothing. He needed one of the big time programs to acquire a name, of course he did. As did every "name" player for decades.
