Had a buddy that was a member of Lima Co. and was killed on Aug. 3, 2005 in Iraq. It's hard to deal w/, but we were able to turn it into a positive situation. We started a annual memorial and veterans awareness benefit, which at this point, allows us to give away 7 $1000 scholarships to students of my former high school, as well as provide for the Blue Star Mothers to send care packages to the troops. Also, we sponsored a Habitat for Humanity home, which my buddy had always wanted to help with.

You think all people want to be there? I guarantee some kids are forced into the military by their parents, or feel obligated to do so, etc. Those kids don't "want" to be there. Some may go into the military for financial reasons, free college, etc. They don't "Want" to be there.

RIP Lt. Runkle. He has some extended family in my hometown and I have been following the story through them. I imagine it's a very tough thing to go through and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. My brother is in the Army and served in Iraq and Kuwait...I hated every minute he was there. I am so thankful he stayed safe while he was deployed.

In my squad in Nam we had three guys that was serving their country because they where given this type of an option. I would have given my life to protect those guys … True Grunts ….
They may not have wanted to serve their country in the beginning but in the end they wanted to live just like everyone else and live being a Patriotic American Soldier

Belly don't get me wrong. I know it happens and I served with a couple of them. I just don't like it. I wanted everyone in my Squad to get back home I would do anything for them. We are still great friends and they know how I feel about it.

Really are you saying I am not a true grunt?

Do they still give those type of options? I know on an episode of JAG years ago (i know, I know, its only a show) they said that was supposed to not happen anymore.

As far as wanting to serve next to someone who was given that option. I would have to say it would be on a case-by-case basis. How competant is the soldier? Just becuase he was given that choice does not mean he wont be a good soldier. I imagine there are MORE poeple who joined the military who didnt want to because their parents pushed them into it, or they felt the economy was too bad and the military was the only option than there are those who got the 'jail or military' option from a judge.

I wouldnt hesitate to serve next to someone who joined the military over jail. I would trust the training and indoctrination they put you through would transform ya into a good soldier.


My version of 'hitting close to home' is a little different than the OP. My brother became a Navy SEAL and his first weekend at his unit was the weekend that Operation Red Wings saw over a dozen Navy SEALs killed in Afganistan in June of 2005. Up to that point ya knew it was dangerouts and all but that is when it all hit home for my brother, and our family

Sorry to hear this, This just happend where im from in Allen county, I girl I graduated with just lost her brother. Its crazy he was the guy in school almost everyone wanted to be like, a nice guy great football player and overall good person it sucks to lose anyone but yea when its someone you know it just seems to really hit home.
