Newt would humiliate Obama in debates, but that doesn't make him a good president or even an acceptable president. There is nothing anyone could do to make me vote for him. I think the other thing Willard doesn't want seen in his returns is the rather large amount of money I suspect he has given to the Mormon church. He has trouble with the Evangelicals anyway because of his faith, and that will likely only fuel more questions about his faith which he doesn't want talked about.
Couple that with what is surely numerous tax shelters and other such loopholes (like the fact he only pays 15% income taxes) and those tax returns present a treasure trove for his opponents now and BHO in the future. Probably why he is so desperate to keep them under wraps.

In theory, he'll have released the records and had sufficient time for the furor to die down well in advance of any debate with Bam. Unless there is evidence of unlawful evasion in his returns, the story will last a couple news cycles and be gone. He's by no means the first rich person to run for President.
