Quick side note: I do use Union Labor for some jobs that require a prefered skill... Electricans, Plumbers and Masonary but manufacturing operation labor work force .... can not support

You have a choice for all of that...do you want the job or don't you? If you don't want to join a Union...you don't take the job...it's that simple.

I used to love getting those cards each election season on whom it is recommend I should vote for, along with that 200 initial fee and 30 bucks a month membership fee from the union (and that was on a PT job so one week a month ya got hosed because of the union dues).

See here is where you get it wrong....

The Company feeling was that you where the best individual for the position. They hired you to work and to provide for your family and to earn a living if you work hard and advancement if you do a good job.

The Union came in after the fact..

So where should your dedication be? Company or Union

Should you not have the right to make the choice of who you want to be obligated and dedicated to? Should you also not have the option to donate to something you may not want to join or support.

At what point did you give up your rights and freedom … ?

See here is where you get it wrong....

See...here's where you have it wrong...you know going into that job that it is a Union job. You know when you apply for said company, it's a Union company. So, again, you have the choice of whether you want to work there or not. Thanks to those rights and freedoms, the choice is yours. Do you want to work for that Union company that you CHOSE to apply at or don't you?

Union came in AFTER I was there a couple years. Was a shitty place to work before the Union, because it offered no security. They just let good people go, for really no reason at all. A very shady company. It's biting them in the ass now, because we're hiring big time, and temps-to-hire won't stay. Factories nowadays don't give a shit, from my experience, they'll just replace you, which they're finding out, some got it, and some don't, and it's putting them in a bind. You can't just let good people go for bullshit reasons.

But if it's any consolation to you, belly, I am going after a company, salaried job right now. But even that isn't secure. If, for any reason, I happen to not be able to perform the new duties, I cannot return back to hourly production, but will be let go. That's shady, too.

You are OK with that scenario?

That your future is predicated not on your skills and your abilities to work for this company but based on whether you are willing to be a Union mule.

What if the company put out a sign and it said “White Only” employment that would be racists .. Right?

So explain to me the differences between “Union Only” and “White Only”

I have been hired and fired by three companies each twice and one three times… Job security when out the window some 20 years ago…

You want security .. be the best at what you do, learn every aspect that applies to your job, learn it fast, place yourself in a position where you are needed. Place your standard high and your requirement to do the job higher. When you raise the bar others want to ride your coat tails. Your boss is the next job you want but don’t let him know.

Really Belly? That could possibly be the dumbest analogy I've ever heard. Again, you have the choice to work there or not. It's up to you. You can't use the "rights and freedom" argument when it only benefits you. Fact is, you have the "rights and freedom" to work at that Union company. It's up to you. Nobody is forcing you to work for a Union, you are making that choice. YOU are CHOOSING by accepting that position that you are going to work at a Union job. It's pretty plain and simple. There is no arguing it Belly. You have a CHOICE to work for a Union. But I'm done discussing it...that's not what the thread is about.

Atta boy Belly. A person should never look for personal security from someone or something else. You won't find it.

The only security a person truly has in the economy exists in their own skills and abilities to create or bring value to others.

Backwards view IMO. One should not have to join a union to get ANY job. They sure as hell aren't responsible for creating said job.

Worked third shift one time since I needed extra money. Never doing it again.

Worked from 7:30 to 6:00.

Belly I respect your views on unions I am against unions now a days but in there prime unions were needed. Ive worked for several unions as a plumber and had no choice but to join if i wanted to work on the job. Granted i was making 30+ an hour so it didnt bug me to join. I thank the unions for the job i have today and the benefits i have. If it wasnt for the unions we would never have had the same stuff today.

Ive worked third shift several times and I loved it. I have always tried to stay on third but never could for some reason i got sent to first which i could never stand.

Easier still would be that anyone can apply for any job, without being forced to be in a union. It's law in some places, and should be the law nationwide.

That would be great if it was stupid. Do you want the job or don't you? If you do, you join the Union. If you don't, then you apply for non Union jobs. Again, it's pretty simple. If someone's too stupid to understand that, well, that's not my problem. Keep bitching about the Union.

Indeed. I was pointing out that it is counterproductive and is almost guaranteed to make the company less skilled at what it does, because it unnecessarily limits the talent pool.

I'm not saying it is, or necessarily should be, illegal. I'm saying it's idiotic and is only harmful to a business entity.

There is nothing to which your company can be compared, thus any analysis is flawed.

A multi-million dollar company (let's assume that is net profit, as it may be) could look like it runs well until someone is able to show that it can be a billion dollar company. Then, all of a sudden, the multi-million dollar tag doesn't seem so glorified.

However, since we are neither here nor there, that analysis cannot be made.

What can be shown is the fact that they are a multi million dollar company. Under a Union. Seems to work out just fine there.
