There is no rule book. I'm telling you why you will be labeled a frontrunner for the rest of your life.

Exactly what "bad years" has N. Carolina had -- and I mean really BAD years, not a down year here and there?

Sorry, but that's not a bad spell by any stretch for fans who have watched their favorites struggle for many years.

It's easy to be a fan of programs that win so consistently...even if they have a few down years each DECADE but counter that with Final Four appearances and national titles.

The fans to admire are those who have stuck with a team through decades without so much as a league championship, let alone any Final Four visits or titles.

Ohio State went 20 years without winning so much as a Big Ten title in basketball.

Now THAT is the kind of bad cycle that tests the mettle of any long-time fan base.

Of course, much of that blame comes from two things: The thugs on the Minnesota basketball team (including the coach) that physically and mentally destroyed a championship team during that brawl in 1972...and started a very steep decline for a championship coach (he was labeled a racist prior to and after that brawl, during a time when there was a lot of racial tension in this country. It helped kill recruiting).

Ohio State didn't step in and support their coach as they should have (another reason he went downhill) and they also didn't make a change sooner when it became apparent that Taylor was no longer effective.

Then they hired Eldon Miller and the "nuclear winter" of OSU basketball took hold for another decade until Gary Williams came in. He got things going in the right direction, and had everyone excited -- but abruptly left before winning anything so he could coach at his alma mater. Then Randy Ayers was hired. Ayers managed to stop the title drought at 20 years, by winning back to back titles, but then fell apart as he brought in players with poor character and failed in his attempts to rehabilitate them.

OSU tried to clean up its act by hiring someone they thought was a person of impeccable character in Jim O'Brien, and he turned out to be the worst cheater in OSU basketball history, having his only good seasons vacated by the NCAA because of that cheating.

Ohio State finally returned to its former basketball glory years when it hired Thad Matta -- and he has had the program winning titles and moving in the right direction ever since. Hopefully, his health holds out and he stays at OSU a long time, and brings home a national title sooner rather than later to break what is now a 51 years title drought and counting.

Nobody can call long-time OSU basketball fans front-runners, because we've been through more pain and suffering than just about any other program with a similar amount of Final Four appearances to its credit.

Okay, end diatribe and here's hoping Ohio State can beat up Duke when it comes to Columbus as the program continues to climb its way into the NCAA's basketball elite.

As a duke football fan I say Ohio state fans know nothing of suffering. No winning seasons since 95 no bowl wins since 93 last league title in 89 and even then since the 1960's four bowl wins...dont quote me but it is something like that.

Add in the fact Carolina state and even wake have perennially hammered us and in 99 we actually won a lawsuit where our lawyers argued we were so bad that any team in america would've been better for Oklahoma than duke. From 96 to 99 duke lost 32 consecutive league games and in that span only picked up 8 victories (5 against 1-aa schools)

While true swamisez, Duke also never HAD any success in football -- so it's not like the fan base got used to winning at any point.

I understand the pain being the fan of a losing team, but it's probably worse if you've tasted success for a good number of years and then cycled into something really bad for a long time.

I was an Indians fan from the mid 1960s forward and never saw them win much of anything, certainly not a division title, for more than 30 years. It was actually kind of easy to fall into the "lovable loser" mode because nobody ever expected anything...ever. That did end up changing, so anything is possible. You have to keep the faith, hard as it is sometimes.

Anyone have a good site where I could order some?

Duke won the ACC title the first year we had season tickets for Duke FB. Spurrier was in his 2nd year and things were definitely looking up. Beating Carolina in the battle for the bell was something I will always remember as a little kid.

My first dance, was my last so to speak. At the same time the Reds won the title the following year and the Bengals were in the 88 Super Bowl.
As a fan, Duke FB was great, Cincinnati was winning......then splat. It has been a rough 20 years, were it not for Coach K I may well be in the grave.

Looks like Greg Paulus is officially on the Buckeyes staff. Jeff Boals just welcomed him to Buckeye Nation on Twitter.
