Granted, i didn't attend OSU, but they deserve to be defended in this case.

OSU doesn't need defended by anyone, they have plenty of zealots who do that. Take a gander on the college football forum.
btw, should have the Duke diploma by 2014. Granted its a graduate degree, but it still says Duke.

Fair enough, and congratulations on the degree! A graduate degree from Duke is impressive, that is for damn sure. What field? I have a few friends who did PhD work there.

I just don't think you need to be a douche about it. Sure, OSU has some bad apples, i.e. a few on the football team, but it is still a very impressive Big 10 school, and a great public university.

Nothing worse than someone who can't be intellectually honest enough with himself to recognize that OSU is a darn good school, and that a few random high-profile folks on the football team, for example, arent representative of thousands of students.

What did Dockery get on his SAT again?

Well known for academics - going into Sr year of High School Dockery had a 2.3 GPA and a 15 on his ACT. He eventually qualified.

M.A. in Liberal Studies/Teaching. No PhD on the horizon, but who knows. As for OSU I was commenting in jest, I know it takes more than those criteria to get into OSU. It is especially harder now than in years past. I like giving the Buckeye homers grief since they made this year on the cbb forum so enjoyable (ugh)

As for Dockery, I don't know what kind of rigamarole the Duke admissions dept put him through to get qualified. I know it was a sore point in the Chronicle with portions of the student body. Eventual qualification is a broad term, but I would trust Coach K to not bring in a student he didn't think could handle the course load. Dockery's Chicago ties were cited for K's request for his admission. I am confident defending the academic pedigree of the basketball program because there are so few non-qualifiers who have walked the halls. By-enlarge Duke has had more academic hits than misses. The same can't be said for other schools mentioned on this forum.

Ohio State has increased its admission standards. It is true, that it is harder to get into OSU as a Freshman. Other than that, transfer students are still taken on very easy admission criteria. This is typical of all large public institutions.

It is well documented.

A great editorial in the Chronicle shows the feelings at least one Duke student had towards K recruiting Dockery:

I know that not all players are like Dockery. As a matter of fact, most, I think, aren't. Jason Williams had a 3.5 grade point average last semester. But coach Mike Krzyzewski has become such a god in the college basketball world that he could get pretty much any player he wants. I know this too.

Despite that fact, with the case of Dockery it became quite clear to me through DBR posts and The Chronicle's letter to the editors that we were far more concerned about winning college basketball games than maintaining academic integrity.

The general feeling is that we would like 1,500 smart students with 12 great basketball players to win their games for them.

If that's true, fine, I don't agree, but so be it. Let's just stop masking it in this "great mix of academics and athletics" malarkey that schools use as one of their selling points.

This is not the way this fourth generation Dukie grew up viewing his favorite team, nor is it the thing about which Dick Vitale continually boasts every chance he gets.

From the Duke Chronicle - the article speaks for itself.


"For the Class of 2007, 768 male non-athletes were admitted to Duke with an average SAT score of 1,438, while 42 recruited athletes averaged 1,172. For females, 786 non-athletes averaged 1,403, versus 37 athletes' 1,258.

That's a 266-point gap for males and a 145-point gap for females.

And in case you're interested in a team-by-team breakdown, the eight men's baseball team recruits averaged 1,206 that year, while 22 football players averaged 1,063 and the five men's basketball players came in last at 997. All 14 other recruited male athletes averaged 1,258..

Considering the national average for the 2002 SAT was 1,026, it's a safe bet that few (if any) non-athletes could even get their foot in the door with stats like the ones above.

Yet the most elite recruits (read: prospective basketball players) can be tentatively admitted before they've finished their junior year of high school; all that's needed is a PSAT score and freshman and sophomore grades.

This must have been how our beloved Sean Dockery got admitted with a 2.3 GPA and an ACT score of 15;. at the time, his credentials didn't even meet NCAA minimums of a 2.5 GPA and 17 on the ACT.

Which brings me to my point: Although I, too, will never forget the night Sean Dockery beat VT, this snapshot of our admissions process is a University-wide disgrace.

Indeed, is it really too much to ask for these student-athletes' scores to come within shouting distance of their classmates?

And can we really be an "academic" University when our lofty standards are so clearly subject to the athletic department's needs?.

But most of all, why should non-athletes like myself accept the argument that sporting ability should outweigh inferior academic credentials?"


I have no problem with schools making admissions exceptions for athletes. My problem is with fan bases who don't admit their favorite school or coach compromises the admission process to get the athletes that are needed to compete. The line "He coudn't get into duke" just isn't true. If coach k wants him, he will get him in.

I don't have a problem with kids like Dockery getting an opportunity. In spite of his less than stellar high school transcript, he was able to graduate from duke.

Did it work out in the end for Sean Dockery? If he graduated with a Duke degree, then the gamble on him by Coach K was a success. (edit: I really don't know or care to research this) I thought it to be common knowledge that Dockery was a project of Coach K's.(Chicago ties) Really, not the banter I expected when this game was announced.

Duke isn't like Ohio State, you need more than a pulse and a low SAT score to get in.

As I said earlier, that was an ignorant statement. Entering OSU as a freshman is an accomplishment. However, you don't get to 60k students without relaxing admission standards for transfer students.


I could see OSU winning this game, but Duke possibly winning a rematch in March.

FYI Not a duke fan by any means. Are you still a "frontrunner" if you become a fan as a kid and stay with the team for years after? Even in the bad years?

If Duke is anything like Notre Dame, graduating doesn't prove you should've been accepted. Most of those top schools graduate close to all of their students in 4 years-- it looks good number-wise to do such. Can you imagine being a top student, spending 52k a year and having to go five years? Not very appealing. It would've been difficult to fail a class at ND... I'm not saying B's are easy, but the real difference is between the A's and the B's (specifically the cutoff from A- to B+, and to a greater extent that A/A- cutoff).

Crap, I don't mind the Texans so much. But I really hate the Spurs, Mavs, Cowboys, UTexas and the Astros. Whatever should I do???????

I'm merely telling you that last time I checked I didnt know of any rule book on being a fan.
