I'm 100% shocked. This has shaken my faith in the always steadfast and scrupulous FIFA organization.

http://www.cbssports.com/#!/general/story/15050579/fifa-members-accused-of-corruption-in-world-cup-bidding
Soccer's governing body was hit with new corruption allegations Tuesday when six FIFA executive committee members were accused of receiving or demanding bribes during bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Issa Hayatou of Cameroon and Jacques Anouma of the Ivory Coast were allegedly paid $1.5 million to vote for Qatar, according to evidence submitted to a British parliamentary inquiry by the Sunday Times newspaper.

The Gulf nation beat the United States in the final round of voting in December for the 2022 tournament.

It's enough punishment that they have to host this abortion of an event.

Yeah I'm not surprised by this either. I actually figured there would be a few more then just 2 people taking bribes.

yeah.i would think that countries would bribe them to NOT bring the WC there. Ugh..the humanity.

I sure hope the US gets it soon so we can, AGAIN, hear the communist soccer fans saying that 'this time it will be different and soccer will be huge. Its hte most played sport in the world'.

Um...yeah....because much of the world is so poor and soccer all ya need is a ball to play...and people with zero ability can play it. Millions of kids play it in the US until they got older, and smarter, and realize how gay it is and decide to play real sports.

much of our country is poor, and all you need is a basketball and a rim to play bball...what's the difference? You also need no skill...you also really don't even need a hoop if you're saying soccer you don't need a net...

Following the 1994 WC, there's been a league started in the US that now averages >17,000 attendance per game with 18 teams and the US soccer program has founded its own academy in Florida that has helped to produce world-class talent for the first time in ages. Meanwhile, ratings for the 2010 WC were up 31% in 2010 versus 2006 and ESPN knows they've got a good looking cash cow on their hands, especially come 2014 when primetime matches are played in primetime (since the WC is in Brazil).

Surely soccer will not eclipse any of the major three sports - NBA, MLB, NFL - in popularity any time soon but it's not wrong to say it's growing in popularity. Also, lol at your zero ability comment. People with zero ability can play basically any sport that only requires a ball and a playing surface. Doesn't mean they'll be any good at it.

Only about the bribing to keep the WC outta the country. It probably would be good for some economies.

The rest of it...yeah.........any kid who can stand and walk can do the basic function of soccer of kicking the ball. My 2 year old niece was kicking the ball around the other day.

reason why it is popular around the world? Because it is as cheap as you can get as all you need is a ball, and any limpdick can play it with no ability whatsoever.

Take a kid with zero athletic ability and he can function playing soccer. Put him on another sports venue and he wouldnt be able to do the simplist of tasks

This does nothing to help the popularity of soccer in this country. Learning that we lost the WC bid because of corrupt politics isn't going to endear the sport to the casual fan anytime soon.

Wow those are some stupid points. Ok...guess what I could dribble a basketball when I was 5. I could throw the ball in the direction of the hoop. Guess it takes no ability to play basketball right? I could throw a ball around. Hmm looks like baseball is easy too. And if the only reason soccer is so popular around the world is because only poor people like it, why is NFL Europe not the most popular sport around in Europe? Why isn't the Euroleague basketball wildly popular? Last time I checked people don't live in houses with dirt floors in Europe or anything.

And as for soccer catching on here, no one said it has or is going to. It will never replace football, basketball, or baseball as one of the most popular sports here and that's fine by me. What I can't stand are people like you who act like no one here cares about soccer, especially the world cup. Do yourself a favor and youtube up people's reaction to Landon Donovan's goal against Algeria. There are plenty of people here in the US who care about the world cup and if the US got to host it, it would be amazing. If you don't like it, that's fine, no one said you had to. But just realize that your justification for your opinion is also heavily flawed.

A kid with zero athletic ability can throw and catch a baseball, throw and catch a football, and pass and shoot a basketball which I would equate as the simplest of tasks in those sports. Doesn't mean he'll do squat when he's out there. Same goes for soccer - a kid with zero athletic ability can kick the ball but it doesn't mean he'll do anything.

Wait, by your argument, football would be the easiest sport. All you have to do is hold the ball in your hands and run. I'm willing to bet that most of these people who play soccer would make you look like a fool. Probably in other sports too.

But yeah, not really surprised that this happened. I couldn't think of any other reason for them choosing there for the WC.

thavoice, you have obviously never played soccer. I had views the same as you once. I was a pretty good football player in high school, decent at basketball, and decent at track. In college, some of my friends wanted me to play intramural soccer with them, so i did just because I like to play sports. Let me tell you I could play defense with my "athletic ability", but was terrible on offense. Its a little harder than it looks.

Anyway, back on topic before the idiot gets this thread sidetracked, will anything come out of this? I would love for Qatar to be revoked from their hosting status. It's still a complete joke that they are hosting a World Cup. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Qatar has never been in the world cup. A country should be a past participant of a World Cup, before they even get a chance to host one. smh. FIFA is so corrupt, and such a joke.

Had to laugh at this story after just reading this one earlier today.

http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/news/_/id/6519441/fifa-focus-match-fixing-fight-crime-bosses
FIFA president Sepp Blatter said his organization "would lose all credibility" if fans lost faith in the honesty of matches.
Fuck actually awarding the world cup host honestly though.
