Florida made some goof hires.

Former Florida assistant John Pelphrey will return to the position he held from 1996-2002. Donovan also added former St. John's coach Norm Roberts.

I thought Pelphrey was just starting to turn things around at Arkansas. Odd that he chose to go back to Florida and leave what he built in Fayetteville. A house.

This is a very good hire for Duke. As a head coach in the Big XII, Jeff Capel proved a master recruiter and had an important hand in the development of superstar Blake Griffin's game. I would also assume that Capel has built strong recruiting ties to the far midwest, an area in which Roy Williams and North Carolina have had somewhat of a stronghold in recent years (namely Hansbrough and Barnes).

Nice news for Duke fans.

Genetics is the only thing that had a part in the development of Blake Griffin's game.

I think somebody was demoted.

Nate James has been "reassigned", I believe.

Capel is a good hire for Duke. I don't necessarily like him, for obvious reasons, but he's much more bearable than those two twits that usually flank Coach K on the bench.

James was made Special Assistant.
IMO Nate James and Nolan Smith has done more to rebrand Duke over the last 4 years than any other coach or player. They totally changed the culture through their recruiting efforts.

Coach Carawell is moving farther down the bench, he is a graduate assistant basically. I don't know how he can hang on much longer without Collins or Wojo bolting to take a head coaching position somewhere soon.

That may be. But the fact of the matter is, Jeff Capel recruited and then coached Blake Griffin during Blake's ascent into NBA superstardom. And that's the story 16-year-olds who watch childlike and astounded as Blake dunks overtop Toyotas on national television will be hearing when Jeff Capel walks into their home wearing a Duke polo. That is a pretty powerful combination of imagery.

What about.....

Willie Warren, Tiny Gallon and Tommy Mason-Griffith? Did a lot for their careers too, right?

I never saw Blake dunk overtop a Toyota... I did see him dunk over a Kia though.

Personally, I don't understand the hire. I guess it is kind of like K befriending Mike Jarvis after he got axed at St.Johns. He was showing up behind the bench for a while then just disappeared.

I guess K is going to play wet-nurse to Capel until he gets another offer.

I think most recruits are smart enough to understand that Capel had nothing to do with Griffin's rise to superstardom. This was God's work.

Maybe, Capel is the coach in waiting.

So he puts one guy in the NBA and he's a guru? Also he jumped over the hood of a small car it's not that impressive most of the NBA players can do it. He only won bc he was the hometown boy and they already had him as champ before the first dunk even happend. You can have Capel I'm not worried or impressed.

No way Capel is coach in waiting. He would have been on staff earlier.

If that happened Duke nation would be in stunned silence.

Queue the Coach K to the Lakers talk.

I'd say Coach K going to the Lakers is a lot less likely then Capel being the coach in waiting. But I agree I'm sure we will start to hear a lot of talk about K going to the Lakers.

As a follower of Duke, I'm just looking at the positive aspects of the hire. And there are certainly some very positive facets to this move. I think he can become a great support piece as a member of the Blue Devil staff. This is good for the program.

As for Capel being K's heir apparent. Please. At this point, Wayne Fontes is more of a shoe-in. Although a good young coach with a proven ability to recruit in the high-stakes world of big-time college basketball, Capel was unable to sustain the overall success of Oklahoma's program, and, as a result, was released from that position. So what would make anyone think he'd be the special, hand-chosen leader-in-wait of Duke? This is Duke we're talking about. You don't go from dismissal to Duke.

Heard that Carawell is now an assistant in the women's program.

Gosh I feel sorry for that guy. 2000 ACC POY, gave all he had to the program and things just haven't worked out for him.

As for the heir to K, it is gonna be Wojo. Hand picked the day Wojo ran across the floor to hug him when they beat Carolina.

10 years as an assistant at Duke would more than qualify someone to be the head coach.

Also, it isn't like there is a huge active coaching tree going on. Is his name that much worse than Mike Brey or Jeff Capel? Probably not.

I would like to think that Duke can survive past Coach K because of its history, Cameron, financial commitment etc.
