Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel told investigators that he first notified the university's top compliance staff he had a "tip" about issues related to the team's tattoo scandal in December 2010, nearly a month earlier than the university claimed. Multiple sources told 10 Investigates' Paul Aker that Tressel claimed he verbally disclosed the tip he received about his players' involvement with tattoo shop owner Ed Rife around Dec. 16 to compliance director Doug Archie, Julie Vannatta, Ohio State's senior assistant general counsel, and perhaps others.

That's not old news if Tressel told them. They fired him for not telling them.

Sources close to the university investigation said that during a February investigative interview, nobody questioned Tressel about the nature of the tip or what "social choices" meant.

On Thursday, the university categorically denied that Tressel has ever told anybody related to the investigation that he disclosed the nature of his tip in December.

There's a contradiction in what the university is saying already. Either he told them and they didn't question it, or he never told them.

Also, on December 16, 2010, the six student-athletes whose eligibility was affected
were interviewed by institutional representatives. Shortly after the conclusion of the
last student-athlete interview, Director of Athletics Gene Smith and Tressel met
briefly with those institutional officials who had conducted the interviews to ask
about the status of the information and its implications on the anticipated eligibility
restoration requests. During that conversation, University officials asked Tressel
about his knowledge of the information. More specifically, Senior Associate General
Counsel for Athletics Julie Vannatta asked Tressel if he had been contacted by
anyone about this matter or if he knew anything about it. Tressel replied that while
he had received a tip about general rumors pertaining to certain players, such
information was not specific and pertained to the players? off-field choices. The
University interpreted his responses to mean that the tip related to the social
decisions/choices being made by certain student-athletes. Tressel also mentioned
during this December conversation that he did not recall from whom he received the
tip and that he did not know that any items had been seized.
Nevertheless, the
conversation represented another opportunity when Tressel could have informed the
institution of his previous e-mails with Cicero.

Ch. 10 should be ashamed of itself. More anonymous sources said BS combined with information that was already know by the NCAA months before OSU got its letter of allegations.

"Coach Tressel’s formal, written response to the NCAA’s Notice of Allegations on July 8; and the NCAA’s own Case Summary received yesterday on July 21 all make clear that when Coach Tressel was interviewed by a number of people within the institution on December 9 and December 16, he did not share his knowledge about the NCAA violation.

As we have previously stated to the public and the NCAA in our filings, Coach Tressel only sought advice from the University in January 2011 -- after the university had discovered e-mails that showed that he had knowledge of the matter and in contradiction to his statements to the University the previous December. That sequence of events is summarized clearly by the NCAA in its Case Summary.

The University categorically denies anything to the contrary, and such allegations are inconsistent with the conclusions of the NCAA and the University.

Any attempt to characterize events differently would be unnecessarily damaging, inaccurate and entirely misleading."

"Based on interviews with multiple sources who had access to transcripts of Tressel's statement during a Feb. 8 NCAA investigation, Tressel claimed to have told athletic director Gene Smith, Vannatta and Archie of his tip, Aker reported."

The whole transcript of that statement is available on OSU's website. I just did a quick search of it and didn't see anywhere where he said he told them specifically about the tip.
