From the Governor’s Press Release:
“Ohio has tens of thousands of outstanding teachers for whom education is more than a job—it’s a calling. I’m grateful for the work they do and I encourage every Ohioan to take time this week to thank an educator for their commitment to Ohio’s future. Recognizing those good efforts and incentivizing it is why I want to replace Ohio’s outdated pay system for teachers with one that rewards high performance. Currently, teachers are paid largely on the basis of how many years they’ve been on the job. That’s not fair because it fails to recognize the successes of Ohio’s highest-performing educators. I want to hear from those teachers who want a better way and who have ideas for how to get us there. I look forward to working with them to create a better way,” said Kasich.

… ..

In addition to a new performance-based pay system, other education reforms proposed in Kasich’s Jobs Budget include expanding charter schools and school choice vouchers, encouraging schools to reduce overhead costs by sharing back-office functions, and giving parents the ability to take over failing schools and reconstitute them with oversight from the state.

At the risk of taking this where it shouldn't go, what is the punchline? I'm completely missing it.

Because one thinks that Unions are detrimental to the public means that one cannot appreciate what teachers do?

Interesting logic.

Kasich hates teachers. If he gets his way teachers will be learning to like rice and beans all while Kasich feasts on steak, lobster, wine, and brie. He will not be happy until he sees teachers getting evicted from their homes. He will laugh when teachers are working summer jobs flipping burgers a McDonalds to help pay the rent in thier 2 bedroom apartment. Kasich will not be fully satisfied until retired teachers are barley eaking out an existence. Kids if your parents are teachers you better be prepared to take care of Mom and Dad when they are seniors.

This declaration is nothing more than a slap in the face.

I appreciate what teachers have done for me in the past, giving me the education to vote for the proposals outline in SB5.

I'm not sure where the irony is in appreciating teachers and giving them the opportunity to get a better deal for themselves than an uninterested party gets for them.

that would be true if the reason of SB5 wasnt to save money. the "opportunity for a better deal" is just a line of bs in hopes to get public workers on board.

I can only speak for myself. I'd almost certainly negotiate a better deal for myself than the union ever would.

This was sort of what I was getting at.

Do teachers = unions? If so, then I agree, this is ironic.

If teachers are more than just union pawns, then there is no irony here.

No you wouldn't. You only think you would. The reality is that only the Union could negotiate any kind of decent deal for you. Without them, you make minimum wage and have terrible or nonexistent benefits. You can't be trusted to be responsible to get what you need. You don't have that ability. They have to do it for you, or you won't get anything.

well you could in a perfect world, but remember, your city budget is what it is. it isnt going to get bigger just because you as an individual or even as group, work harder. there isnt going to be any more money for you to negotiate with.

nope, but most live in a land where when the company does well, there is more income for the business to pay its good workers with.

Better performing police, fire and teachers make for a better community, which makes for higher property values, which makes for more revenue, which makes for higher pay.

I still am not understanding how some do not get this concept.
