Siding with Peterson on the whole "slavery" thing probably at least annoyed the fuck out of his fan base. This takes it a few steps farther. People who work in a profession where lots of blunt head trauma happens really should NEVER voice their opinions on current events...or anything more serious than what kind of jelly they like on their toast.

Peterson did originally have it. Mendenhall supported him. From the Steelers Bleacher Report page:
On Twitter, Rashard Mendenhall supported Peterson's comments by stating, "Anyone with knowledge of the slave trade and the NFL could say that these two parallel each other."
Many fans were upset with Mendenhall and reacted very negatively to his comment.
People insulted him by calling him everything from overpaid to uneducated.
In an attempt to clarify his comments, Mendenhall sent a series of tweets that came off as slightly condescending and didn't help matters.
"If you look back and dissect what I said, I [didn't] say that the NFL was slavery, I said that they parallel each other. Look up the word parallel."

Stupid ass comments. Sadly, he's not the only American who feels that way. I've seen other comments on Facebook pages saying similar things. There is no other side to hear. The guy was a fucking extremist murdering fuckhead.....and I'm glad he's dead.
That being said, I'll still be rooting for #34 on Sundays. I'd be willing to bet that other players in the league, maybe even one on your team, feels that way too. Fuck their opinions.....I'm rooting for their production on the field.
I think teams are taking more risks on players with character issues now and it's being excused and this is just a shitty opinion, not a crime. I don't think NFL players will care enough to try to take out his knees. LOL
