It seems like each umpire has his own zone and I also think when they crouch over the inside close to the catcher they really don't see the outside corner so that's why you see some 6" outside called strikes, maybe it's the old Nolan Ryan story where he threw so fast the ump's comment was " it sounded like a strike"
