Just returned our POS Vizio lcd to Costco and want to pick up a new tv tomorrow. The two I am trying to choose between are a 50" LG (50PV400, Costco's version of the 50PV450) or a 50" 3D Panasonic (50GT25).

The Panasonic is a model I've been thinking about getting for a long time but I was impressed with the LG when I saw it tonight. It has a much slimmer profile than the Panny, which is nice for our living room. It's eventually going to be moved up to my office, though, so I'm not sure it's that big of a deal long term.

CNET is great for reviews of tv's. There's really nothing of value anyone can tell you about those two particular tv's, other than Panasonic has a very good reputation (although there's been a fair variance even within models year-to-year, but that might be a very nuanced perspective of videophiles).

If it were me, I'd look at updated reviews of 2010, even 2009, models to see what models have held-up the best (i.e., I know at least one Panasonic model had significant deterioration in black performance in less than just 1 year), then go look online to see if you can pick one up (but be careful who you order from online). Probably by far your best option, and best value.

Looks like CNET rates your Panasonic as the best (this is also where I saw the blurb on deteriorating black performance - prior year model)

That's the VT model, not the GT model.

Sorry, that was for overall tv. The GT was included in the best overall plasmas.

The LG is $799, the Panasonic is $879.

I've been eyeing the Panasonic model for a long time now, like I said earlier, but the LG really impressed me. My only issue with it is that it appears to be a newish model so there aren't many reviews out there for it yet.

They don't have a review for that particular LG....I think the Panasonic is the easy choice. According to CNET, Samsung and Panasonic are easily the two best plasma brands right now.

LG is generally a pretty good brand, Panasonic has just been in this game quite a bit longer.

If you are thinking plasma, then Panasonic is the way to go. I love mine, and apparently so did my dad and my father-in-law, be ause they both bought one after seeing mine.

but the LG really impressed me.

I was impressed by the LG as well but we have had nothing but trouble with it. It started with the sound, then the screen quality dropped significantly, and did I mention the black line one inch wide and ten inches long at the top of the screen. All of the troubles started in the first two years although the sound issue was fixed under warranty. LG is a huge POS IMHO.

I wouldn't go 3d until the passive 3ds are more available. I am not a fan of those battery shutter glasses.

Went back today and the 50" Panny was sold out. I ended up getting a 42" Panny instead. Same model, just 42" instead of 50". It was only $697 so I ended up saving a few hundred bucks. So I got that going for me, which is nice.
