and the Seantrel Carousel continues....
Miami Hurricanes offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson is rumored to be transferring to Minnesota for family reasons, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Charley Walters. Henderson is the St. Paul Cretin-Derham star who had Ohio State in his top two coming out of high school before signing with Southern California. He backed out of his commitment at USC and signed with Miami after the Pac-10 school got into trouble with the NCAA.

Here's the original Pioneer Press article with the mention:

Rumor that won't die: Former Cretin-Derham Hall offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson, who played his first season with the Miami Hurricanes last fall, considering a transfer to the Gophers for family reasons.
That said, Charley Walters is a dolt and I severely doubt Seantrel transfers home. I'd like it if he did, he'd instantly become the Gophers' starter at LT and one of their best players (he was pretty good last year at Miami, starting 9 of 12 games), but I'm not holding my breath.

Damn, I thought this was going to be about his reported workout numbers. Miami just did some testing, and Henderson has shown great improvement on his bench press. He can now bench 270 lbs, and Miami was pleased with his progress. How that is improvement for a man of his size and ability is beyond me.

He has to sit out a year first...in that year I predict he fails out of school

If its dumbbell bench as shown in the picture then thats not much better for a guy his size. Probably equates to about ~315 bench.

Sometimes the people who are supposed to have your well being at hand, are only out for their best interests. Henderson has so much talent, it's a shame that his father is ruining it for him.

bench press can become extremely difficult for people with long arms. although 270 is rather shitty.

You've gotta be fisting me? I could do 275 when I was weighing 175... Seantrel weighs how much? That's ridiculous

the bench press is probably the most useless lift for football. if you are pushing from your back in football , guess what you lost that battle. i remember years back working out with 3 football players one from YSU , bowling green and the other was the starting defensive tackle for ohio state. the players from bowling green and YSU handled way more weight in the bench press than the starting DT from ohio state. but that buckeye could squat around 800 lbs.

I've heard this before and I am generally inclined to agree. However, the bench is big at the combine and thus players should be doing it for that very reason. Laying an egg during the bench press session can really short circuit your draft stock.

at the combine they measure how many times a player can bench press 225 lbs. thats not a test of strength that a test of endurance. like a legendary strong man and former steeler great jon kolb ( who i used to see on daily basis) once told me football is game of leg drive. "i could bench 550 at a body weight of 270 but that did little to help me, but i could squat 800 that did help me"

I dont care if you say having a high bench press isnt important for football, that is incredibly sad for a guy his size.

So why do a lot of offensive linemen do twice as many reps as most RBs/WRs? I would venture a guess that skill players for the most part have better endurance than linemen, yet the bench press doesn't bear that out.

Exactly. If he is doing any kind of working out, 270 should not be anywhere close to his max.

probably because the weight in which they use 225 lbs, as comparison to body weight. alot of backs and WR's dont even weigh that much. how much does the aveage lineman weigh? so that test really isnt a good test of anything.

Well in the article it states he squats 375. That is pathetic for an o-linemen at that level. That's not much more than his body weight.

Yea, I squatted that much as a Soph/Jr in high school, and I on the higher side of the team. (Like 10-15th out of 60 guys) I think one kid on the team did somewhere in the mid-high 4s. 375 for a D1 Lineman is pathetic.

Bench press is highly important for offensive lineman. Initial contact is usually made with their hands and if they can't lock their arms out and hold back the defender they are in trouble.

When you think of the bench press as a sport action specific lift, then yea, it's sort of pointless (who would push off their back?) But to build general upper body pushing strength and size? It really can't be beat.
