Ludwick took a full swing and got if off the end of the bat. So Gomes ran back on the ball thinking Ludwick got a good piece of it, but the ball ended up dropping in front of him for a hit. It looked like a lack of effort but I've played outfield all my life and those are tricky...especially when you know the guy has serious power and he takes a full hack. Ends up making you look foolish when they get it off the end or handle.

Wow, loading them up for Janish. Reds up 1-0 thanks to Votto going first to third on a hit and Francisco getting him in.

Damn, disappointing end to the inning. Effin' GR-doubles. Screwed that inning all up. Juan would have scored and Heisey probably would have legged a triple. if it happens in that sequence, I doubt they walk Ramon.

Seems like everyone complains about Angel Hernandez. I'd complain too...the guy rarely has the stones to ring hitters up.

They wouldn't have, the only reason they walked him was to set up the double play.

Nick work by Wood to come back on Ludwick after falling in the 3-0 hole.

Padre fans might hold a lynching of Angel Hernandez.

Stubbs is finally showing signs of life. Good to see him work his way out of the rough stretch he's been having. He came up big last night and has 2 knocks thus far today.

Juan being Juan. Grounds back to the pitcher for an easy DP to leave runners at the corners.

Heisey with magnificent hustle and concentration to make a play on a blooper down the line to end the Padres threat in the 5th.

This is the best defensive team in the NL, no question.

If Heisey is going to catch one out of two in the air that inning, he got the right one and he was patient and did just the right thing once he didn't catch the other. Result was another scoreless inning in the 5th.

So whose gonna be the odd man out for our new OF?

Gomes? Bruce? Stubbs? Heisey?

Certainly can't be Stubbs...Bruce, no way....that leaves probably Gomes or Heisey

No reason to worry about that right now. :D

It's hard to tell what will happen down the line, especially since Sappelt is lookin' like he's gonna be a big time player within' a year or two. Hell of a nice problem to have!!

I also foresee a "play Francisco over Rolen" thought from Reds nation later in the season when Rolen historically has been pretty bad.

Stubbs and Bruce need to start 5 of every 6 games, Gomes 4 of every 6, and Heisey 4 of every 6, with the non-starters other than Gomes being late inning defensive replacements when the Reds are ahead, with Gomes being a late inning offensive replacement when the Reds are behind. That is assuming all four are healthy and playing reasonably well. Then what happens when Lewis comes off the DL?

Bases loaded with 1 out and the Reds only give up a run. Pretty good work by Wood in the jam...and hats off to Smith for coming in and closing out the inning.

Dusty gets the Smith-Venable match-up, that he managed away from with one out, with two outs. Good job by Wood to get Hundley, even though he got an RBI, for the 2nd out. The good things Dusty wanted was to get out of the inning with the lead, and to have Maybin out of the game if they pinch hit Venable.

Chapman is struggling mightily this inning...and he's topping out at 94 mph. Not a good sign at all.

Terrible bunt by Hudson...but a GREAT play by Chapman to make the play!

I'm a little worried about chapman. Maybe and hopefully it's just fatigue a little.

Definitely a concern for Chapman...he can usually hit 97-98 with ease. He was barely hitting 93-95.
