Gomes hit a hanger. You could tell it was gone as soon as it hit the bat

Bruce misses the same pitch right down the middle....and that's the ballgame. Piss poor pitching performance.

I still maintain that I have never witnessed Francisco get a hit.

Pitching doomed us today. Masset needs to get his crap straight. Counting on him to hand the ball to Coco

Huh? Not much you can do when your setup guy can't throw a strike and then when he finally does, it goes really really far

There were a few of these threads at the beginning of last year, so I expected the thread to be made by now. ~5% of the season is quite a long way into this season. ;)

The players have to get it done when called upon...hello Masset......but IMO I do disagree with how Dusty used the bullpen.

He yanked Leake at the right time...it just wasn't working anymore....Smith brought in even though Leake was due up, but Leake couldn't get it done for another out. So Smith was kinda wasted, but to no fault of Dusty's....Ondrusek was brought in for the 6th inning and did well as usual throwing 18 pitches.....In the 7th Ondrusek is brought out, but never pitches.....Chapman comes in. Here is my issue. Chapman didn't even get up until Gomes hit his 2 run HR to give the Reds the lead.....Renteria was the next batter and he didn't stay up there too long and Jay Bruce made the 3rd out immediately as he got to the plate......3 minute commercial break and they bring in Chapman. I told my wife not to be surprised if he isn't sharp as I doubt he's warmed up enough for him.......WALK.....and was kinda wild the whole inning but managed to get out of it after I think 24 pitches.

We'll never know but why not let Ondrusek begin the 7th and see how it goes....he's not exactly chopped liver. If he does fine allow him to finish the 7th....if he gets overloaded with pitches bring in Chapman during the inning allowing him several more minutes to warmup. Chapman could've taken them to the 9th.....then Coco.

Early on Masset scares me....he'll be fine...but he's not looking good.

Stubbs: .265

While I would agree that Stubbs and Bruce have been scuffling a little, their averages aren't as bad as you might think. Bruce is probably going to hit .265 on the season and Stubbs will probably hover right around .270 as well. They're young guys and they just need to hit their way out of it.

Gomes has been walking but other than that, he's been pretty pedestrian with the bat. When you factor in his limited range defensively, I think it is fairly simple as to who should be getting out of the way when Heisey needs to get some PT

I agree that the youngsters need to play through it, but they don't need to play every game, and Heisey needs to play some too. I'm basing my call for Stubbs or Bruce to sit based not on what the stats are for the season, but how they've been looking at bat the last 4-5 games, which is not good, and that is the time you put them on the bench and play Heisey.

What do you think the seasonal effect of runs per inning allowed by the Reds will be in the differential between the innings Janish plays SS vs. the innings Renteria plays SS?

I can't be too harsh on Leake for giving up the lead. The first run was directly attributable to the Janish vs. Renteria defensive proficiency gap. Leak knows the importance of getting out the lead-off batter - that is why he was so upset at not catching that lead-off blooper back near him that he gloved, but couldn't hold. That let the first of four tying runs on, then a seeing eye grounder up the middle, then a slow grounder just inside 3B that Rolen had no chance to get an out anywhere, then another grounder to RF by Drew. That combined with two productive outs set-up a five run inning on one misplaced pitch.

The Reds 9th started like that with BP and Joey reaching on similar type struck balls, then Rolen's bid to put himself, the tying run on 2nd, with no out was thwarted by the play of the game by Young in CF, but Gomes going the other way in an important spot(one of the few times for him this year) gave the Reds a good chance, but Putz, using his breaking ball to nicely set up getting the fastballs by Franciso and Bruce put the game away.

The Reds really dodged bullets in the 6th and 7th when AZ put the lead-off runners on! In the 7th on a grievous walk by Chapman, likely because he wasn't quite ready yet, especially since he pitched last night. In the 6th they escaped due to the strike-em-out throw-em-out DP, and the 7th the Chapman pick-off of the walked runner.

Reds have a disturbing trend going in series records: 3-0, 2-1, 1-2. Could a sweep be coming in SD? It's lucky the Reds came up with some runs in the 9th last night to win that one. I felt the same last night as I did today - that they couldn't win if they had to hold AZ to no runs in their last 3 at bats! Coco never got to try that test last night. The AZ hitters really impressed me this series, quite a difference in their approach at the plate from the last couple years, being a lot of tough outs. Bruce and Stubbs are two spots in the order where the Reds aren't following that model. What happened to Stubbs ever laying down a bunt to put pressure on the fielder? Do they think his bunting is so bad they're better off never bunting him and letting the infielders play back because he is no threat, and getting more infield hits from him on nubbers than they ever could on bunts due to him being atrocious at bunting?
