overall, nice start

unfortunate they let Saturday's game slip away but they rallied to win two games on the road to take the opening series, can't complain about that

Kind of ironic that the Pirates start the season with a 666 winning percentage......

Make that a .750 WINNING! percentage. They beat the Cards 4-3 tonight. Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen were the heroes with a two-run double and two-run homer, respective in the sixth. Charlie Morton was also a hero. He overcame five walks to only give up one run in six innings to take the win. The only concern was Evan Meek, who suffered a second straight horrid outing, giving up two runs without getting an out in the eighth. Fortunately, Michael Crotta (.2) and THE Hanrahan (1.1) closed out the game without further incident.

This team is full of heroes. Just let it be known that when everyone on this site is in awe...I was here first!

Good decision by Hurdle to take Meek out. He has to get his act together.

But a lot of positives.

Morton's start. Veras, Crotta and Hanrahan in relief.

Walker and McCutchen continued some clutch hitting.

They're getting some decent starting pitching so the wins are coming. Hope that keeps up. I like the aggressiveness of the team--especially on the bases. It's like night and day with Hurdle vs. Russell.

As a Reds fan I am enjoying the Pirates early success. I hope they can sustain it for the entire season but finish 2nd in the division, of course. I don't think it's likely but stranger things have happened.

No. Why would I name 50 when I'd only need 1 for my statement to be true?

Technically, you'd need two for it to be true, as you said "stranger THINGS".

Damn. That's a pretty nice turn around.

Who is tossing for the Cards tonight?

Kyle McClellan. 26-year-old making his first major league start although he's pitched as a reliever for a few years.

James McDonald for the Pirates.

Carpenter pitches for the Cards on Wednesday. Pirates need to get this one tonight and then they can drop Wednesdays and still be 4-2 in the season-opening six-game road trip.

Pirates fall 3-2

Pujols go-ahead RBI single was the difference

Overbay hit a 2-run HR in the 1st for the Bucs but nothing else

Kerwin Danley was horrible behind the plate

That was a real nut-punch of a loss. Two-run dinger in the first against a reliever making his first MLB start...and no more offense. McDonald wasn't ready for an extended outing, apparently, and they were able to rally.

And they have Carpenter tomorrow. He always seems to dominate the Pirates. It'd be a minor miracle if they win this series.

And the game against Carpenter has begun. Scoreless first inning with Neil Walker providing the game's only hit until Pedro led off the second with a single.

Pitching duel through three. Correia's only given up one hit and one walk, while Carpenter is surrendering one single per inning.

Hopefully he gives up more in the fourth, as Overbay led off with a single and then took second on a Pujois error.

Ryan Doumit delivers with an RBI double! Pirates up 1-0 in the top of the fourth.
Jones follows with a strikeout.
Rule 5 Pick (from the Indians) Josh Rodriguez follows with...his second strikeout of the game.

Neil Walker continued what's been a great start to the season with a solo shot in the top of the fifth to make it 2-0. Cards threatening in the bottom of the inning with a runner on third with two outs and Theriot at the plate.

Make that runners on first and third with Rasmus at the plate after Theriot walked.

EDIT: Correia retired Rasmus to preserve the shutout through five. Angels rejoiced from up high. Chris Carpenter's hoping he doesn't have to explain today to his son.
