As for the rest of the tourney, what did everyone think?

Attendance was very low this year as there was no big draw. I may be wrong, but I don't know if they cracked 12,000 for a game this year. To me, other than Hiland, there were really no games that had any personal appeal to watch....tons of private schools.

I thought the play was very sloppy overall and the talent pool as a whole was down more than I can ever remember. I was shocked at how weak Houston was. The region they came out of has a history of being the best in the state. Toledo Rogers was by far the funniest team to watch. I have never seen a kid miss a dunk that badly down there. He almost air balled it. And their coach got so frustrated that he quit coaching for a couple of quarters...very entertaining.

My biggest gripe this year was that there were no gyro carts on Lane until Saturday's games...lol.


Taft was the real deal in D3 and Hiland played a great 2nd half in the Final. I thought D2 was below average and I always hate to see ASVSM win anything. What did everyone else think?

I am a Hiland fan but I am kind of laughing my ass off here at the notion of public schools winning is great because they dont recruit like private schools do. Dont look a gift horse in the mouth Hiland (some) fans. You may not have recruited Seger, but he wasnt "yours" last season.

seems many teams don't play their best games at the state tournamant. Hiland's 2 wins there were overall maybe a bit above average when you compare them to the previous 4-5 games.I'm sure other teams would say they didn't play well. Was not at all impressed with houston, yet they obviously would have had to play much better basketball than that semi to get there. Cleve CC completely laid an egg in the final, etc etc. So I'd agree Hiland probably didn't impress a lot of people by their play there, but at least this year they could still get the job done in spite of that. That happens in past years---they don't advance. And agree, a big reason for that was Seger. He played huge the last few games for us. I honestly believe Hiland would have been in the mix to get to state without him--other guys would certainly have had different roles and would have had to have really stepped up to fill them. We'll never know how that woujld have turned out. But we'd be deceiving ourselves if we said Seger didn't play a major role in getting the championship. Not how we would have drawn it up...but grateful how things turned out.

After attending the state tournament the past 3 days, all I have to say is........it's time for a shot clock!!!

I don't know if some of the low scores were because of stalling....there was some very poor shooting performances.

It was mostly bad shooting but at some point in nearly every game the ball was being held for at least 2 minutes at a time. I caught some ZZZZZs in a couple of those games.

I loved watching LaSalle put on a clinic against Northland. LaSalle's kids were just much tougher and wanted it more than Northland's, IMO. #25 was very tough and didn't back down, and he got underneath Northland's #40's skin quite easily in the championship.

I've been going to the State Tournament for 20 years and this year was by far the most disappointing. Low attendance, not much energy, pathetic fan support by most of the schools. The overall play was sloppy and believe me a shot clock won't help that. You think there is poor shot selection and overall shooting ability now, put in a shot clock and watch it get worse. I hate to sound like an old-timer, but the weekend just aint what it used to be.

Last I checked, the defense is allowed to go out an try to get the ball.

Only saw a couple games at state, but noticed in earlier games in districts and regionals at least several times the team that was down (sometimes by double digits [e.g. McDonald]) was the team that was at midcourt holding tha ball. In our case...we were happy to sit back and let them hold the ball! Didn't quite get that stretegy. On the other hand, noy a proponenet for a shot clock in h.s.

I believe that this season I have seen more missed layups, missed dunks, and missed foul shots overall by nearly all teams, at all levels. More layups hitting the rim and off and few players using the glass on layups, breakaway layups turned into missed dunks.
Did others seem to see this also or was I watching 40 or more lousy games.
I even saw Hiland at Garaway and Garaway at Malvern and from seeing them play those nights you had to wonder if either could get to regionals or state. I guess that's why I laugh when people see a team 1 time and say how bad they are, Houston couldn't have been that bad team and Cle. Central Cath was not 43 pts worse than Taft ( they scrimmaged at Thanksgiving and I think it was only a couple pts then) CCC was lights out against a good Ursuline team in Regionals, but definitely left their "a game " at home Sat.

Every now and again you get a hs kid shoot the ball from the outside really well, but rarely does an entire team. I wonder what the 3pfg % is for each team during the season vs. in the state tournament. I remember Diebler went off in a game against Dunbar a few years ago, but it's not something you see often, so fast break and paint points become premium. That leads to some helter-skelter and/or physical play = ragged basketball - especially if the refs are "letting them play". That's my theory anyway.

During the season a lot of officials work as crews or often work together, and you see them often as certain one work with certain leagues, come tournament time and especially at state you see officials for the first time and they don't know each other and the calls are just not the same as what players are used to seeing during the season as calls are definitely different by some of the officials and players have to adjust.

The more I think about it....the more I agree with this. There is simply no way that Houston was that poor, they played in much too tough of a region.

I think the overall talent was down this yr. in Ohio, there are no sure fire D1 studs coming out like in past yrs..that could have had something to do with lack of interest at the state tournament. Other than Taft nobody else set the place on Fire

They were released last week, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Toledo area was hurt by having their two best teams get upset by Central Catholic, who eventually made it down to Columbus. If St. Johns or Whitmer are in it, attendence is up, since both teams have OSU athletics commits, and Nigel Hayes, will imo, also end up at OSU for basketball.

That probably did hurt some, but the OHSAA has priced themselves out of peoples interest. Tickets are ridiculous for a high school basketball game. The only time the attendance has been good is when there is a big name like Diebler or Lebron.
