I have a 97 cavalier, and will be getting a 90 cav for free. The 90 cav only has 65k miles on engine and tranny (frame is shot on 90), and i would like to swap it out into my 97.

Question is:

Is this possible?

Would it just be a matter of keeping the 97 intake and fuel injectors with the 90 engine, to keep the 97 computer?

What engine is in both cars? That's going to matter a lot obviously. If they are both the 2.2's...I'd imagine that would be possible. But I believe the 90 model also had the 3.1 in it? If you are going from a 2.2 in the 97' and trying to put a 3.1 in it from the '90...that would be a little more involved.

like gochiefs said, if they are different sized motors, there might be some extra work needed, but its definitely possible.

I bought a '69 Caddy for a derby car years back. It has a 502 in it. Beast of a motor. Too bad they are no good for derbys.

Ok, I have to edit a couple things:

It's a '91 Cav, Z-44 I forgot to look if it is a 2.2.

My only concern now, is the motor mounts may not be the same, as the body styles are different.

That is very possible that they could be different, I would also be concerned with joining it to the tranny.

The swap is very possible with a few modifications to solve these issues which involves more time and cash.

The tranny in the 91 is a 5 speed, as is mine.

So if my tranny does not match up right,,,,, tranny swap too? Is wat I am thinking.

I would say yes to that if you already have the engine out it would make it that much easier to swap the tranny as well on a front wheel drive car. If the tranny in the 91 is in good condition with only 65k on it I would do it.

What is the mileage on the 97 BTW?

about, 150k (on the 97)

I looked at the gauge on the 91 yesterday, it said almost 80k. (I was told he thought it was 65-70k).

Why not just drive it the way it is until the engine starts having problems, then swap it out?

This...but additionally

Cavaliers were z24's not 44's, the Lumina came in a z34 however.

Also you really need to look under the hood and get some specs, the z24 came in four engine options, two 4 cyl. (2.0/2.2) and a v6 (2.8/3.1) I think. You better know what's up before you start pulling shit out Lol.
