Any experience with Ubuntu?

I had a shut down/blue screen virus that infected my PC to where it was not functional. To make the long story short my Dad spent two weeks with my PC and got rid of the virus and changed it from Windows Vista to Ubuntu. It works great and is immediately responsive but I know nothing about this Ubuntu.

What do I need to know about Ubuntu to maximize it's capabilities?

It's nice. I've used it on one of my computers for several years. It's generally very user-friendly (installing software tends to be much easier than on Windows). They have a great forum that provides a ton of info to get you started, if you have any issues.

Yes, using the Ubuntu software center is amazingly simple. I just pull it up, click on it . . . and it installs. Done. No money, no clicking next-next-next-finish, nothing. It's just there and it works.

The selections aren't great if you do a lot of gaming, but otherwise, it's pretty comprehensive and easy.

Once you start getting into it you begin to realize why people like it so much. And with WINE you can run many Windows applications so even that is there.

Unless you have some programs that can't run on Linux through WINE there's not really a reason that Linux couldn't be your full time OS. Not that it should unless you like it, but it can.

Agreed. I used it full time for about a year, though I don't use it as my main OS now--we have too much corporate-specific software that has no OSS equivalent. So my main laptop at home runs Windows 7, but my other laptop runs Linux.

And to show how far linux and Ubuntu in particular has come the wireless adaptor and printer were recognised and work perfectly without me doing anything.

I am happy with Ubuntu, running excellently as well. Good stuff here using Ubuntu without unwanted BS or compatibility problems, I like it so far.

That's just amazing because I can remember even as recently as the 7.x versions of Ubuntu having trouble getting the wireless recognised at first.

Yeah, wireless was terrible for a long time. Awesome that it just works now.
