That said, our insurance is through All-State. I guess I should get a quote through USAA and see how it compares. I swear I got a quote a while ago and it was higher than All-State.
I'd have a hard time believing that. The wife and I got quotes a couple days ago on some other things as well. Getting ready to switch our auto insurance (half the interest rate for the same length of time) and our banking over from Huntington and PNC, respectively.
Only thing I've heard they don't do as well with has been mortgages, but that was even several years ago.

liberty mutual and/or nationwide have always been my 2 choices.
when my wife when on a crash 'em up derby spree and hit every vehicle in her FOV we had to switch to Progressive since no one would touch her. Progressive sucked. If all you care about is saving money, Progressive is okay. But if you want help with anything, Progressive sucks.

From what I've been told, this is the same with Safe Auto, but I guess it makes sense.
"Minimum coverage for minimum budgets."

Safe Auto is a way not to protect any assets that you might have.

I can tell you this like I tell everyone. When picking an insurance company there isn't much difference between the big dogs, major companies. The most important thing about the company themselves is are they able to financially cover claims and losses without govt assistance? You will find that during a catastrophe this will come into play and if you got insurance for the guy down the street or some small time company, good luck!!
Now I work for SF, and by the way they are a fantastic company to work for, but their insurance and prices may not be best for everyone and that is understandable! Now what I do is handle our staffing needs for our call centers around the country and analytical work like forecasting and reporting.

When we were shopping around, the lowest actual quote came from AAA.
Another issue we're running into./afraid of is switching EVERYTHING. Like I said, we have 2 drivers/cars, home owner's, and malpractice. Our home owner's is in escrowe (sp?). If our insurance goes down, would we just get a bigger check at the end of the year for w/e is left over and pay the difference at the end of the year if it's short?

Just ran some quotes tonight on USAA. Auto insurance was about $100 cheaper every 6 months. Homeowners insurance was almost double, though. Eff that.

Unfortunately, I have no frame of reference. I don't yet have a mortgage. Renting. Their renter's insurance is like $11 a month for us, though.

Looks like Michigan is the most expensive state for car insurance.

For those that do not qualify, here are the next five in alpha order:
Amica
Auto-Owners
Cincinnati
Erie
Hartford
Of all the OH car insurance companies I have been with so far, I’ve found The Hartford really good with service as well as rates!

Me neither. I've had nothing but bad experiences with Michigan drivers. They've been awful.

There are prons/cons to going direct, captive (SF, Allstate, Nationwide, AmFam, etc.) or independent. Like Fab stated its not necessarily who is cheaper, who is able to pay out claims. There are companies that sit on claims and hope customers drop it. I've seeng good, bad and ugly with a lot of carriers.

Back when my mom worked, she was an employed by Cincinnati Insurance, and my family has most of their needs covered by Cincinnati. Great company, when my house burnt down back in 2000, they were there with a $10,000 check to find us a place to stay, get clothes, eat, and more that I'm sure I was unaware of at the time.

My parents went to an Indie dealer and changed from State Farm to Erie. They saved over 100 bucks and got more coverage for their home. Got a good deal on car too.
