I agree that point guard is the only spot where I think an athletic woman could remotely positively impact an NBA game. Their duties would probably just consist of hitting the occasional open three if their defender fell asleep and handling the ball competently and not turning over because they would still have such a hard time getting open or effectively running an offense because they would still give up so much strength and speed to their male counterpart. No matter what, they would definitely be a defensive liability.Manhattan Buckeye wrote:This is accurate, in college I did the practice squad with our women's team that went to the Final 4, and had a couple of players that eventually played in the WNBA. The most competitive women's players against guys were easily the point guards. If you have an athletic woman that can handle the ball well and has good speed they can be tough to defend, the team's point guard would easily make my HS team and probably could have started, she was 5'9 so wasn't too short and she could definitely handle the ball. She wouldn't have been a huge scorer and may have been a minor defensive liability but I would play with her. The post players struggled more because with many women height is somewhat of a diminishing quality. The team's center was a legit 6'9 and had a nice shot and was pretty coordinated for a woman that tall, but she had almost no upper body strength and couldn't jump. That wouldn't work against a decent men's team, and certainly not the NBA. Diana Taurasi is probably the closest to competing because she's so athletic and has decent height, but NBA players are no freakishly athletic a la Rajon Rondo, I couldn't see her beginning to be able to guard an NBA point guard.namod65 wrote:No he's pretty close actually. I've talked to some guys that were on the practice team for Duke's women's team. They said if you were a good high school player than you could easily hold your own. And they have one of the best programs in women's basketball.pnhasbeen wrote:I wouldn't go as far as this.Non wrote: Nope.
I would say that the best women players are the equivalent of a good high school player that is not D1 caliber. Maybe Division III or Division II but that's it.
But no way in hell a woman plays in the NBA.
