Looking to buy a new receiver and then piece the rest together after. I have a pair of speakers that will get me by until then.

What type of receivers do others have?

I don't think you can go wrong with a Denon, Marantz, Pioneer or Harman/Kardon.

Forgot about Yamaha. I've thought about getting an RX-V663. They are definitely great receivers.

I have the Denon AVR 1610 in my basement theater, it is the bomb diggidy.

i have the 1611. absoluetly no complaints.

my advice, don't skimp on the speakers and especially don't skimp on the subwoofer. i skimped on my 2 front speakers and immediately wished i hadn't. i also tried to use my old cheap-o sub, but right after i turned on the new system i was like what the FFFFFFUUUUUU????? went and bought a 12" polk sub that night.

That really is the idea with these. You can piece a decent system together but make sure you don't cut corners in any area as you'll notice it.

I have an 800 watt Sony....4 years old. Still nice, i'd rather upgrade. From my experience with their DJ equipment...Denon makes quality products.

Piecing together is the way to go.

I have the Denon AVR-691 (or is it 591?). I've only had it for a few months. So far so good. My only gripe is that I can't find a way to play music via AUX while watching television/playing ps3/etc.,. I heard that you could do that on the 891 and up?

I believe the 591 is comparable to the 1611. Not sure where the major differences lie though.



EDIT..forgot to mention that I have not programmed any of my remotes yet. I've noticed a delay in displaying the picture on my TV (Sony Bravia) over the sound (Polk CS10 center channel and monitor 30s). The sound comes on first, and then the TV. It doesn't happen often, but it's happened enough for me to notice it. Again, it's probably because the remote is not programmed to control tv on/off yet.

Second EDIT...the same thing has happened, but in opposite order. TV first, then sound. Sometimes the TV will be on with picture and no sound. I then have to hit the "SAT/CBL" button again to get the sound back on. That has only happened once or twice.

I kinda doubt it. I think they only price match local places....might be wrong though.

I spent $1,500 on this Sansui 8080 receiver back in 1977. Only 80 watts but in its time it was state-of-the-art....and it still works great! I also own a Onkyo home entertainment system that's nice.

A lot of the "big name" companies (Sony, Pioneer) go from entry level to higher quality equipment. Find what features ya want, then compare distortion levels.
IMO- a lot of them are so darn close, prob' made in the same factory overseas.


The speakers are the key. I'm a fan of Cerwin-Vega. For the car and home. (my .02)

I'm no expert on audio equipment, but do you really believe that?

i'm not an expert by any means, but from my 2 experiences with home stereo systems, it's as important as the receiver. but it's your party.

Quality speakers and a quality receiver are both as equally important to achieve the optimum sound.
