Seinfeld
Cheers
The Office (seasons 1-3)

In that order.

The problem with sitcoms is that the successful ones outlast their normal lifespans because the networks force a cash-cow to keep producing. All shows "jump the shark" eventually, Seinfeld came as close as possible to stop at its peak, but still the last season was pretty rough, and the last episode was godawful.

Black & white Andy Griffith, Mayberry, is the greatest show ever ... of all time .... for all time.

Black and white Andy Griffiths ARE the best ever, a somewhat distant second, All in the Family....in it's prime. My dark horse, a sitcom that I think is very underrated, but I laugh my butt off everytime I watch an episode (even if I've seen it a hundred times), is The King of Queens.

I honestly love gunsmoke, (Festus is the bestus), but I don't think it qualifies as a situation comedy.

Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared are so awesome. The star power in those shows was incredible.

Shows that I watched as re-runs (due to my age)
Happy Days
I Love Lucy
All in the Family

Shows that I actually remember watching "New"
Roseanne
Friends
That 70s Show

Modern Family has the very good possibility to be an elite sit-com.

Those 6 came to mind real quick.

A new comedy that I like is Rules of engagement, with David Spade and the guy that played David Putty on Seinfeld. I also have liked the new one perfect couples. good casts.

Do you get IFC? They show re-runs a lot on there of both shows. I used to love F&G. Only saw a few episodes of Undeclared and thought it was ok.

Well, some of these I might not argue as best ever, but my favorites in order....Was going to make a top-5 or top-10 but just couldn't put anything with these 3:

1. Seinfeld
2. Married With Children
3. Cheers

Well, there's not really much else I can put up with those. Men Behaving Badly and Friends (up until about when Ross/Rachel became a couple) are almost worthy. And I think the Big Bang Theory is the smartest comedy I've seen since Seinfeld. I'd put it on my list of top-5 but too soon for that.

I could rattle off a ton of "classic" sitcoms, as well. Different Strokes and Three's Company are a few that haven't been mentioned yet...Good Times....And, of course, Sanford and Son.....Tool Time (or whatever it was called) and Night Court.

IMO, the main reason the classic sitcoms just don't stack-up to the Big 3 is because those were different times when the politically incorrect and taboo were rarely touched. Just less bullets in the gun, if you willl.
