I am going through a rough time in my life right now and am suffering from depression they put me on some meds and they actually seem to be helping. Just wondering what other people have done to help them get over there depression.

Perhaps not running, but getting in shape does make a lot of people feel better about themselves. Both because the chemicals your body produces that make you feel good as well as the fact that most people feel accomplished and know that they did a "good" thing when they workout consistantly.
That and keep on keepin' on like Joe Dirt says.

CCrunner, what if he has asthma? Then you just killed him.
My best advice is that when I seem to be going through a hard time, I seem to forget that I have some pretty great friends. Don't forget about them.

A great leader in my life always mentions "Pain is required to heal, but misery is optional" Many times we continue to focus on the negative things in our life when often we could just as easily focus more on the good things in life.
Every day I try not to worry about things that I can not control. It is easy to say, but it is not easy!

Whatever you do, don't turn to "God" or drugs for help. They are both equally as damaging and likely both as costly(in $ terms).

One good rule of thumb is to never take advice from sleeper.

I've never dealt with it, but have family members that have. They took meds for it and all was okay. I know its nothing you just can't ' snap out if it' type of thing.

Love the irony of this post. Don't turn to God, yet flying the ND banner under your name... LOLsleeper;685531 wrote:Whatever you do, don't turn to "God" or drugs for help. They are both equally as damaging and likely both as costly(in $ terms).

Guys, full blown serious depression isn't helped by working out. Getting through the day sometimes is a task in itself. Not saying the OP goes through that, but please don't tell a person with depression to just go and work out lol.

A night at Holiday Inn Express does the trick for me.

I suffer from severe depression. It's something you really have to be careful with. Don't just rely on medication to solve your problem. Yes medicine does help but you need to talk about it with someone as well. Talking to a friend or family member is not really the route to go. Yes they love you and say they will not judge but they do. The best is talking to a professional because they don't judge you and will listen. Don't be ashamed that you have this disease you can get help. I go to a counselor every Wednesday and take medication.
Let me know if there is anything you need.

Thanks for all the advice. I work out at work and it really dont help me much. Friends tend to judge as much as they give you bad advice which i have learned the hard way. I turned to the doctors cause that was my last chance at feeling better. I actually am starting to feel better and more then likely its the meds I just feel there are other ways to get past it besides meds. I am a very out going person but havent been myself for a few years and just now decided to do something about it cause I was embarrassed to talk about it. Now that I realize how common it is its actually is becoming better for me cause i am more open about it. I have told my doctor I would like to talk to a professional about my problems instead of turning to my friends. So hopefully he will take me down that road tomorrow when i see him. Thanks again to all of you for your advice it is helpful.

Went through some bad depression too sophomore year of college. I got some meds but the best cure was good human interaction, made some good friends. I've been good ever since then. Hope you get through it too bro. It's a bad time to go through that some people don't understand.

Depression is a real and hard state to overcome. I think it's not so common for it to be chemically related, though. Depression, IMO, is one of those things that gets heavily misdiagnosed. Sorta like ADHD.
Not trying to be a debbie downer to the thread, honestly! But I think that alot of times it's just too easy for a doctor to throw a prescription at somebody as a first response and go on about their business. I also wonder sometimes how many Americans walk around medicated everyday.

I've struggled with it for a long time.
This year was the first year I was put on medication for it, and it has helped immensely. I still see flashes of it from time to time, but it's not as bad.

I'm not a big believer in medication, but I've never been in any type of situation where I've felt I really needed it. Even after surgeries I usually hesitated taking pain medication.
With that said, and not getting too personal, what is the cause of your depression? I don't want to sound simple minded, but I understand depression with the loss of a loved one, or extreme financial difficulties, or problems with kids. But for other who just struggle finding happiness, what is it that causes depression?
And I'm not here to judge, I just have never really dealt with anyone that suffered from depression.

Even the word “depression” is pushing you down.
Now is a good time to rethink your life and do things different… if you’re down the only thing you can do is go up and that is a positive…
Never when to church … go
Sleep in late ….. wake up early
Never help someone …start
Some friends are assholes .. dump them
Eat wrong .. eat healthy
Can’t do something … learn how to do it
Do pick up after yourself … get a life and do it
Can’t cook .. try it
Depression is simply tell you what you have done in the past is not working and you need to reevaluate yourself to change “you”
Set your standards higher .. do what you can for yourself to make you better .. rethink some to the decision you made and don’t make the same ones again…. You are in control and you are better that you are now.
I find strength in God …. I read 10 minutes of the Bible or some Daily reading … then ask for specific help in praying and be prepared for the results. The path may not be what you expect or want but if you stay focus on Believing the end produce is always better.
You can in your mind make everything a negative or you can find the positive and move forward ....
