I have a couple of thoughts on this.
1. I applaud him for sticking to his beliefs. I would feel the same way if I was going up against a girl in a contact sport (football, wrestling...). I can understand not wanting to slam her down on the mat or something like that. Just like if it were football. If you were a SS, would you hesitate to lay a girl out as she came across the middle for a pass?
2. The way our society is today (someone already mentioned the butt drag incident), it isn't that far fetched to see someone get charges pressed against them for grabbing a boob or rubbing up on the clit or something. You wrestlers can't tell me that while trying to execute a move, you've NEVER touched a guy's junk by accident.
3. As liberal as I am, I truly don't think that girls should be allowed to play on boys' teams. (Co-ed is different, I'm talking about Title IX shit). I remember there was a guy I went to high school with that wanted to be a cheerleader and was told no. You rarely hear of this going the other way (I think there was that lacrosse kid in PA).

Kid is an idiot.
And for all the "he's just sticking to his beliefs" people. So are the Westboro Baptist people and they're dumb as shit. Just because something is a belief of yours doesn't exclude it from criticism or from being absolutely silly.

+1, the hypocrisy of Title IX is the main reason why I don't believe girls should be allowed to wrestle against boys.bigkahuna;683000 wrote:I have a couple of thoughts on this.

The difference is huge, the Westboro idiots are infringing on other peoples rights, he is not.
Such a bad comparison it isn't even funny.

I wouldn't want to wrestle a girl. I don't care if it's a sport, a wrestling match can get extremely physical and brutal and some people just can't get past how they were raised. And here's a case where if he doesn't go all out and wrestle his usually match he very well could get beat. IMO it's not fair to put the guy in that situation. Girls should not compete with boys in contact sports. What would you say if this were boxing? And when you start talking about cross faces, throws and other moves wrestling isn't all that different - people do get broken bones, busted shoulders and bloody noses and mouths.

Well the girls decide to put themselves in potentially harmful situation when deciding to wrestle with boys. When I wrestled a girl in high school I treated it like a regular match and just wrestled. To reiterate myself again wrestling a girl isn't that big of a deal. I had to girls try to wrestle on my team but they took their beatings and quit just like many other boys that decided to try wrestling too.

But just because you and others can do it doesn't mean this kid is a chicken or full of shit. Some guys don't have a problem hitting a women but that doesn't make it right. Not a great comparison I know, but I don't think it's fair to say this kid should be comfortable wrestling a girl just because you are or because she signed up for it.

A teenager weighing in at 112 lbs, girl or boy has do advantage/disadvantage. In high school I knew a couple of girls around 120 lbs that could wipe the hallways with most boys thier size or a little larger.
As for this, this boy is in a disadvantage in life. He is home schooled and his father is a minister. You can say what you want, but this boy has no beliefs of his own, only the one his family has indoctrinated him with. This is neither good or bad, it just is.

I saw the young man was homeschooled (but wrestling for a local school), and that pretty much answered any questions I had about him or the thought process.

You are correct. I might add though, its isnt society's job to parent this boy or instill morals into him. Thats his parent job and we must allow this when no laws are being broken.

That's a pretty dumb statement. Most 112 lbers are cutting from 120 or so and many are capable of benching 150-200 lbs (depends on age). Just because they are the same weight doesn't mean strength and speed are equal. Sure, technique counts for much more in wrestling at all weights but don't try to tell me this girl is physically equal to the boys in that class. Not to mention, she's a freshman and there are many sophomores and juniors, and sometimes seniors, in that weight class.

I wasn't using it to compare the actions. I was using it to show that the idea that beliefs are something that cannot be criticized or questioned is wrong. It being the kids belief has no bearing on whether it was dumb or not.jmog;683174 wrote:The difference is huge, the Westboro idiots are infringing on other peoples rights, he is not.

You just straightened my point. This girl is a fresh woman and qualified for the state meet in IOWA! and exactly how do you know that she didn't cut from 120 or so. We are not talking about the upper weight classes, we're talking about 112.gut;683297 wrote:That's a pretty dumb statement. So I guess that you made a dumb reply.
( I also think the this kid was scared shitless of getting wood or being beat by a girl)

I'm not saying she isn't good, technique and smarts dominates brute athleticism in wrestling almost every time. I'm just saying it's ridiculous to say she's physically equal just because she's the same weight - I saw pictures of her and chest and arms just aren't muscular, which isn't surprising for a freshman - she's quite skinny and likely wrestling shorter boys who have quite a bit more muscle mass. So, no, I didn't make a dumb reply just an non-ignorant one.
Also, it is D3 and sometimes smaller divisions aren't real deep at lower weight classes (keep in mind a lot of schools nationwide have had to cut programs, and wrestling has been a popular one). I would say the fact another girl at states is wrestling in the same division at the same weight supports that.

I am sure many people said the exact same thing about Tim Tebow. I think Tebow's doing just fine with his decisions he's made also.
Not all homeschoolers are totally indoctrinated. He made a decision that he thought was right. So be it. No one is hurt over his decision.

Would this be an issue if he was a Muslim?
I can see how some think it is silly that he doesn't want to wrestle a girl, but that this is a national issue is ridiculous. What if HS boxing was a sport. I'm not religious in the least but I don't think I could box any woman. My experience in wrestling is limited, but even in football I think it would be weird to lay a major hit on a girl - then again I sucked at defense and didn't really hit anyone that hard in the first place!

I did not say he had no hope. I said he was disadvantaged. Tebow is a red herring. mane a couple other home schoolers off the top of your head with out googling it.OSH;683337 wrote:I am sure many people said the exact same thing about Tim Tebow. While an education at home may be the choice for some families, the children do not have the social skills of the kids that go to schools.
A sheltered life is a double edged sword. and having experience relating to a diverse group of people is invaluable growing up

This is all your opinion. There is nothing that backs this up. And nor can it.
I know MANY homeschooled kids. They are tremendous people, some even have tremendous jobs/opportunities, the others are still kids with the potential to have the tremendous jobs/opportunities. I don't need to google any homeschooled kids in order to know the advantages of it.
I stayed with a family who homeschooled their kids, they were also able to go to Utah for 2 months and spend the winter skiing. Their 6 year old was a top slalom skier while also being a VERY smart kid. Oh, the dad was retired by 40 years old, the mom only worked a little as a pharmacist. They weren't sheltered the least bit, they'll continue to live pretty well.
Saying homeschoolers lack the social skills that others do is quite frankly, uneducated. I used to feel the same way, until I met more homeschoolers. Not all homeschoolers look like the Duggars. Not all homeschoolers dress weird, act weird, and/or are socially dysfunctional. It is becoming a very popular education method, and will ONLY be more popular as the years continue. They now have homeschool "schools," where they still homeschool but they get together with other homeschoolers for different activities and learning. I bet if you look at the success in life and education, I would venture to say that homeschoolers probably do much better than their "unsheltered" counterparts.

The girl lost her other two matches 5-1 and by pin and was eliminated. The other girl apparently had an even tougher go losing her two matches.
