I know nothing about macs whatsoever....how do you boot up a mac from disc? A friend of mine got an old macbook for free and it has no OS on it. He downloaded snow leopard 1.6, but he doesn't know how to boot it up from the disc. Right now, he says it has a version of windows xp on it and nothing is working right on it.

If he got it for free it is probably too old for 10.6 to run on it. Snow Leopard requires an intel processor.

gotcha.
I know that he has to replace the hard drive. Are there mac specific drives or can almost any 2.5 drive work?

He said that it has a Intel Duo processor in it.

How did he snag it for free?
Yeah, any 2.5" drive will work as long as the connector is correct (I'm guessing it'll be SATA).

One of his friends didn't want to fool with it, so they just got a new one.

I'm not 100% sure on this but he may have to install Leopard on it first. Is the Snow Leopard he downloaded a full OS or an upgrade? I think I've read where there is actually no difference between the two, i.e. you can do a full install of Snow Leopard from an upgrade disc.
Which macbook is this? Is it a white polycarb 13"?

the snow leopard "upgrade" disc contains the exact same stuff as the snow leopard full install disc.

This to boot from a cd or hold the T key down to boot to a targeted Firewire disk, or OPT to select which drive to boot from.

I was working on a Mac yesterday, but when I went to print the screen, I noticed there was no button for it. I'm sure it's doable, but how?

Command + Shift + 3 - takes a screenshot of your entire desktop and saves a file on the desktop.
Command + Shift + 4 - allows you to make a selection of what you want to take a screenshot of (and saves file on desktop).
Command + Shift + 4, then spacebar, then click on window - takes a screenshot of that window and saves a file on desktop.

Alright, I just finished downloading the Mac 09 Box Set. So if I boot up while holding C it should install?

Edit: I got it for free because the previous owner tried, and failed, installing Windows XP, and he just bought a PC.

while the disc is in the computer, restart and hold down c. it will boot the computer from the disc, not the hard drive, allowing you to upgrade the operating system.

And this will work even when not already on a Mac OS of any kind?

You can do a full install from an upgrade disc with Windows too by the way.
