From what I heard, these are gas lines that run to the south? If that's the case, there is a natural gas shortage down there due to the colder weather. I wonder if they were trying to send to much gas down to make up for the shortage and causing the lines to be over pressurized and burst?

Those lines are old, I don't claim any knowledge, but I doubt the pressure is an issue, maybe for their age. There have been a lot though.

Pressure is actually quite a big issue. No matter how old the lines are.

I'm sure the strength of the lines is downgraded as time goes by, that's really pretty basic understanding.

Saw this last night and drove toward it for a while. Thought it was a barn or something on fire pretty close at first but it became clear that wasn't the case the further away we got and it still looked far away.

A new line is going to bust if over pressurized. That's common sense as well. That's why we couldn't pressure test them with more than 100 pounds of air after we laid them in the ground. Anything over that, and there was a very good possibility of a burst. The gas explosion that happened late last month around Fairport was caused by pressure built up in the lines. Gas companies are going to try to pump as much gas to an area as they can in the time of a shortage obviously.

Two reasons it happened:
1. The pipe is old. Probably 80 years or so.
2. I don't know the proper term, some guy I know called them icequakes but when it gets this cold stuff starts freezing and expanding and pushing around underground. Therefore things are shifting, it shifts an 80 year old pipe that is cold as hell and it cracks just a little bit and the rest is history.

I spent a summer crawling through these pipes in boston rehabbing them from the inside. It doesn't surprise me at all that stuff like this happens to old pipes like this.

Negative, but it definitely could have been. After a week in the pipe your skin was pretty much stained for the summer.

Holy shit. I live 2.5 miles from the house that exploded this morning. I hadn't even heard about it until 5 minutes ago. I do know my stepdad and sister both heard it and woke up because I heard them out in the hallway around 4 am but I just went back to sleep. I didn't see either of them before I left from work and didn't know why they were up.

So they felt the blast 3 counties away, yet, you didn't feel it 2.5 miles away? Heavy sleeper much?
