The girlfriend and I have planned a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico in the next couple months. Wondering if any OC'ers have ever been there and have any advice on where to go and what to avoid. We have had several friends that have visited the island and recommended it as a destination. Any suggestions?

I've been there twice, but only for a half day each time (cruises).

We toured an old battle fort, and did some shopping...From what I remember, the area is nice, not as dangerous/dirty feeling as some of the Caribbean islands we visited....My wife found some good silver jewelry deals while we were there....Didn't hit any beaches in our limited time.

Old San Juan is the touristy area. Get away from it to find and appreciate the true culture of the Island.

It's been too long ago to remember where we went exactly but if you do some homework you will find some incredible restaurants in the City.

I was there about 8 years ago. . . we mostly stayed close to our hotel resort so I couldn't tell you much about the rest of the place. I'd highly recommend a trip into the rain forest. It was beautiful.

I've been to the PR several times. The forts, San Critobal and El Murro are great. If you go to the forts you might as well as go to Old San Juan to check out the history.

Two things I highly recommend is you go to the El Yunque Rainforest and to check out the Bioluminescent Bay. If you like hiking El Yunque is great. It is beautiful and there are some great water falls and streams for you to take a nice cool dip in. The Bioluminescent Bay is cool. You take a nice little boat ride at night along with the assistance of the bay that is glowing in the dark. Absolutely gorgeous.

If you are the gambling type there are also several casinos in Puerto Rico.

Are these things (the rainforest) you can do on your own or do you sign up for a tour with a guide? PM me please
