ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Navy wrestling team will close out its regular-season ledger on Saturday evening when it travels to West Point to battle Army in the annual Star Match. The Midshipmen will look to capture their 11th-consecutive win over the Black Knights when the two programs square off at Christl Arena beginning at 7:00 pm.
Fans unable to attend Saturday’s match at West Point can follow the action by logging on to Knight Vision (subscription based) via the internet at www.GoArmySports.com(.)
The Midshipmen, who enter the weekend with a 4-3 dual record, are coming off the program’s 10th All-Academy Championship title where five Midshipmen won individual titles and three others placed second. In most years, Army and Navy not only will get a good glimpse of one another at the All-Academy Championship, but they generally have a good share of one-on-one matches. This year, however, was different with just two bouts featuring Army vs. Navy.
Although the two programs have not crossed paths much leading up to this weekend’s dual, 11th-year Navy head coach Bruce Burnett feels confident that his Navy team is prepared for this weekend’s challenge.
“The Army-Navy match is always an important dual for us and most certainly it is to both institutions,” said Burnett, who holds a 10-0 record against the Black Knights. “I fully expect there will be some very close matches ... there always are. But at this point in the year, we should be wrestling at our best as we prepare for the EIWA Championship and the NCAA Championship. I feel good about where we are at right now and am confident that we will head into Saturday night’s match totally focused on the task at hand.”
Navy has been the dominant team in the series over the year and Burnett will put five wrestlers on the mat who have previous experience in the annual competition. One of those three wrestlers is senior team captain and All-American Bryce Saddoris (Spring Creek, Nev.), who is 2-1 against the Black Knights. Saddoris pinned Army’s Casey Thome his freshman year but was defeated, 2-1, in a tie breaker by Matt Kyler in 2009. Last year Saddoris provided the Mids with extra points by way of his 17-2 tech fall over Daniel Young.
Ranked ninth both nationally and in the NCAA Div I wrestling coaches panel rankings, Saddoris will have the opportunity to tie Navy’s career wins record on Saturday evening. Boasting a 140-37 record, a win would put him in the driver’s seat alongside former teammate Matt Stolpinski who became Navy’s all-time wins leader in 2008. With his All-Academy Championship win at 157 pounds two weeks ago, Saddoris became the first wrestler in school history to win at least 30 matches in each of his four years. He won 35 matches as a freshman, 43 as a sophomore, 32 as a junior and stands 30-5 this season. He owns a 6-1 dual mark, dropping his lone dual of the season to Rutgers’ Daryl Cocozzo, 3-2.
Returning 125-pound NCAA qualifier Aaron Kalil (Salem, N.H.) owns the third-most wins on the team, boasting a 25-8 record that features a 5-1 mark in dual competition. Though he is not ranked by Intermat, he holds the No. 20 spot in the NCAA Div I wrestling coaches panel rankings. A year ago, Kalil scored an 11-9 victory over the Black Knights’ Lance Penhale in what was his first Star Match appearance.
Earning an emotional and inspirational win in last year’s Star Match was Allen Stein (Portland, Maine), who had spent his entire collegiate wrestling career at 125 pounds but was asked to step into the role at 133 pounds. Stein, a scrappy, speedy wrestler who leaves everything he has on the mat, won one of the biggest matches of his career. Stein built a 5-3 lead after the opening period that included a takedown followed by a two-point nearfall, but his foe, Travis Coffey, proved a valid foe as he put together a pair of escapes and a takedown with a minute to go in the second period to knot the match at 7-7. Stein scored the escape at the end of the period and opened the final period with an escape to push his lead to two. Coffey, though, was credited with a takedown with 47 seconds left to tie the match at 9-9. Stein broke free and was able to hold on for the 10-9 win.
Stein again started the year at 125 pounds, but pushed up to 133 pounds in mid-December. He has been oustanding since the turn of the calendar, winning six of the seven matches since Jan. 1, including each of the last six. He owns dual wins over Maryland, North Carolina and Rutgers and is coming off the All-Academy Championship where he upset the reigning 133-pound champion Derek Gillespie of Air Force in the finals to win his first service academy title. Stein stands 15-11 this season, including 3-2 in dual matches.
It’s been well documented that junior 184-pound Luke Rebertus (Gloucester, Va.) missed the second half of the season. But Rebertus, ranked 13th nationally and 14th in the NCAA Div I wrestling coaches panel rankings, has done everything in his power this season to make up for lost time and has been successful in that task. An NCAA qualifier his freshman year, Rebertus owns a 26-7 record this season, winning three tournament titles along the way, including the All-Academy Championship. Heading into the weekend, he has won seven of his last nine matches, inclduing four in a row. During that run he upset a pair of ranked wrestlers in dual action - 14th-ranked Erich Schmnidtke of Oklahoma and Lehigh’s Robert Hamlin, who was ranked fifth at the time of the dual.
As a freshman, Rebertus earned an 11-4 win over Jake Vetter at 174 pounds.
Senior Matt DeMichiel (Whitesboro, N.Y.) would likely have represented Navy in last year’s Army-Navy dual, however, a season-ending leg injury just weeks before erased his opportunity to take part in the annual competition. DeMichiel is 1-0 against the Black Knights, picking up a hard-fought 5-3 win over Brian Rowan in 2009, his sophomore season.

He’s had a sensational year since coming back from his injury, posting a 21-6 record. He heads into the weekend having won six of his last seven, including the All-Academy title at 174 pounds. Like Kalil he is unranked, however he stands 23rd in the NCAA Div I wrestling coaches panel rankings.
While Navy will weigh-in at least two wrestlers at each weight class, Dustin Haislip (141), Eric Filipowicz (149), Mason Bailey (165), Greg Prioleau (197) and Dan Miller (HWT) will likely make their Star Match debut on Saturday.
Navy owns a 44-5-5 series advantage, including a 19-4-3 record in matches staged in Annapolis. Unbeaten during Burnett’s 11-year tenure, the Midshipmen have suffered just one setback (1997, 19-12) to Army in the last 48 matches, as Navy owns a 42-1-5 record during that span.
In addition to the wrestling team battling Army, both the Navy men’s and women’s basketball teams will by vying for the Star against their counterparts from West Point. Women’s basketball kicks off the day at Alumni Hall in Annapolis with a 12:00 pm nationally-televised contest (CBS College Sports), followed by men’s basketball action at 2:30 pm which will also be carried by CBS College Sports. Both of the basketball games are sold out.
Navy leads the annual Army-Navy series this season with a 10-7 (.588) record, while also holding an 8-6 (.571) advantage in Star competitions. The following teams have the distinction of winning N-Stars for the Midshipmen this year (in chronological order) — Men’s Soccer, Golf, Men’s Cross Country, Men’s Swimming & Diving, Women’s Swimming & Diving, Football, Women’s Indoor Track & Field and Gymnastics.

....was at sectionals and forgot to check my phone. Usually I get updates but was a little engrossed in the HS kids at the time and didn't get the results until late.
I'm hopin' Saddoris gets to AA status again this year. Heskett has a lot of work ahead of him at Army.
