So I'm sitting here waiting on class and there's a guy with an iPad a few feet from me. He is sitting uncomfortably, trying to type out an email or something on it.
Does anyone else have one? They seem like they'd be awkward to use when typing. Also, he looks like a douche because he has an iPad.

A lot of people have them and they are actually pretty cool. All the execs where I work have one

I feel like the novelty would quickly wear off.

My mother-in-law got one for Christmas. They are a little awkward to hold due to the weight. I am hoping they shave some weight off of the 2nd gen.

I don't plan on getting one, ever, but was just wondering how they were to use. Everyone I've seen with one has just looked like they were struggling to hold the damn thing

Wife has one, very frequent use, but not our only device. Uses it for internet, Netflix movies, gaming, teaching notes. I am not sure the internet, gaming or movies is a novelty.

A guy at work has one. He uses it primarily for gaming and internet. He's got a pretty nice case on it, so it sits flat on his desk. Without a case it's a nightmare to type on.

I think tablets in general are a dumb idea. More useless crap that people buy, but don't need.

I agree with sleeper. I haven't quite grasped the excitement over notepads. And who the hell "games" on an iPad?

Ive got one and its awesome, for what I need it for. Its also a portable laptop...more so than any phone. So despite the "awkwardness, though Im sitting so it isnt bad, it is better than anything else". Typing takes awhile, but its not bad to figure out. The iPad also learns your patterns, so if you hit the "m" like I did all the time instead of the space, it figures out that I meant the space and I havent had the issue since, despite, im sure, hitting the "m" often.
I open up excel (or the "numbers app") and keep track of stats for the sporting event I am currently covering. If its a college game, I will use the internet to update scores relevant to the game. Those are the practical uses, that I use almost daily and have greatly helped me.
Then you have the "novelty" aspect of games, netflix, TV shows, ipod (if you dont also have one), etc.
Basically, I love that I have an easy to navigate laptop that I can just pick up and take with me around arenas/fields/whatever for work.

I have a friend that was an exhibitor at CES and can't wait to get Xoom by Motorola. He says it blows away the Ipad

Try lugging a laptop to a cramped HS gym in Toledo, and holding it while taking notes talking to the coaches, etc.
Laptops are great, but they have limitations. Not to mention, mine has almost no battery life. iPad currently goes about 14 hrs of usage.

The fad is not wearing off sorry, it's here to stay. The Ipad and of course a bunch of other tablets are improving and will soon take over for laptops IMO!

I just ordered a nook color and have plans to root it and use it for emails and more importantly administrate some of my Linux servers at work via ssh. The 7 inch screen should make things a bit easier than using my droid incredible for similar tasks.

Who's your friend?
I got my Xoom today. It's absolutely awesome. And I've never been a big fan of tablets in general.

I have a laptop where the screen turns around and folds down like a tablet. Best of both worlds.
It suits a purpose, because I do a lot of signatures for things online (tax forms, approvals, etc.), so it enables me to sign something without having to print it off, sign it, scan it, and email it. I can just sign and send.

The Xoom is pretty sweet looking.
And many people have use for tablets. They're great for mobile web browsing and such. Not so great at other things (anything you need to type a lot/frequently to do).

Seems like they'd be great for just about any form of multimedia or artistic design.
I type like a maniac, though, so I shudder at the thought of having one, as I've thought the same thing.

He is a Gator alum who lives in LA, works in the tv/movie biz. How did you get one already? He was stoked they let him play with the Xoom at CES because the CNET nerd wasn't even allowed, or the general public. They release down here in 2 weeks.

I see. I thought you meant your friend was an exhibitor for Motorola. I work as a marketing rep for Motorola. A few people on the team got their Xoom right after CES. The rest of us just got them so we can start training Verizon employees on it.
It's pretty amazing so far. I like it a lot.

It looks cool but an $800 price tag plus data plan is too much.sherm03;669073 wrote:I see. I thought you meant your friend was an exhibitor for Motorola. I work as a marketing rep for Motorola. I agree 100%. I'm hoping that the leaked info was wrong, and that they will subsidize the price down to around $600 if you are willing to sign a contract. Because if the Xoom hits at an $800 price point, they will be sitting on the shelves for a long time.

I want to get a tablet for deployment, I'm waiting for the Ipad 2 to come out as I heard it'll have USB so I can hook up my external hd. I don't need data just wifi. So I'm hoping for an Android tablet to come out by then (August) that is just wifi and doesn't require a data plan to purchase or get the discount. I'm not a fan of apple.
