So my friend who is addicted to drugs not alcohol decides he wants to go to an AA meeting tonight. He asked me if I would go with him. I didn't understand this at first so I asked him if he wanted to go hear the stories of other people who are addicted to something and he said no. So I don't know what the deal is. What do you guys think? Can just anyone go to them?

He just needs someone to support him. Not understand him, but just support him.

Yes anyone can just go to them. I was supposed to attend one and write a paper on it for my psychology class. I didnt, made up a story, and got an A anyways.

I'm going to go with him. I can't believe there isn't a group for drug addicts closer to where I live.

Glad you are going with him. That is what a good friend does. As Ernest said, he just needs your support right now. He might not be strong enough to go at it alone. You support him and come home and drink ur beer later. LOL

What is he going to do with the drugs he hasn't used yet? I'm sure he could sell them on here somewhere.

You and your friend can go to "open" meetings. Meetings are either open or closed and are listed that way in the directories.

You should go and be supportive because he might be trying to turn his life around and just needs someone close to him to say it is ok to attend the meetings and get help.

It is often times encouraged that those who surround someone struggling with addiction attend these meetings to gain an understanding of the struggle and how they might help create a less threatening environment for their friend/family member.

I had to go to three of them to get a Public Intox taken off of my record. There are a few different types of meetings (discussion, speaker, big book). I made sure to go to meetings that had a speaker because you basically just sat and listened to one person talk about their situation.

If someone TRULY wants to attempt to clean themselves up, they shouldn't look to profit off their vices. He should give those drugs away instead of attempting to turn a profit. GIVE THEM AWAY TO ME!!!!

You know they have chat rooms for narc-anon as well as al-anon. Tell him to look some of those up. If your friend can't type very well or well enough to keep up, it's ok to just sit there and read. It helps!
I have a friend that's going through the same thing. He can't type at all (hunt/peck/slow) and this is what he does. He also calls his sponsor a few times a week. In the beginning he called about once a day, but has sense slowed that down as the initial cravings wore off. Does your friend have a sponsor?

Why exactly wouldn't he go to an NA meeting? To each their own though. Does he know that program exists? And you can for sure go. I spent a summer helping a buddy lead an NA group. If they ask you to talk just be honest and say you are supporting your friend. My guess is you won't be the only one there doing that.
