Is this common? Do teams always stay at expensive hotels like this? I am here for a conference and then I see all these big, tall guys wearing Michigan bball stuff and it hits me, they play here in Cbus tonight.

Probably more common than not. They aren't going to stay at the Doubletree

Of course they stay at places like that! They don't have multi-million dollar budgets for no reason. Their budgets aren't all wrapped up with staying at EconoLodges and scratch houses.

My offices were near the Capital Square. Coincidentally I was over at the chinese place getting some friend rice and saw some of the team come in for some food. I think it is pretty common for teams to stay there. I used to go over to City Center a lot at lunch time and when there was a game in town, I would see the opposing team wondering around from time to time.

I think that most major schools (if not leagues) may use a specific hotel chain and get quite a deal - they're not paying the street price.

Also, the HOCS isn't the quite the place it used to be. The company that owns and operates the hotel recently went through bankruptcy - they just sold it last month, as a matter of fact. It's still a nice place, but I've heard more than one person say it's gone downhill a bit.

That's not even the best Hyatt in downtown Columbus. This is really a non-story.

My guess is that they either stay at the same kind of hotel wherever they travel and therefore have a discount deal worked out, or the host school has a deal worked out with a local hotel where all visiting teams stay.

When my sister got married in South Bend this summer we stayed in the hotel where all visiting teams stay when playing at Notre Dame. In the lower level where the ice machine was there was a Big East themed lounge, a study room, meeting rooms, film room, and workout room. I didn't ask if this is where visiting teams stayed, but since the rooms were labeled things like "Film Room," "Team Meeting Room," and "Study Room," and since the lounge was Big East themed and not ND themed (the hotel is right next to campus) it was pretty clear that this was the place.

I wasn't trying to make it a story, I just wanted to know if this is normal. Obviously it is.

Is staying in a hotel normal? Yes. Are they expected to stay at the Holiday Inn? Nope.

At a minimum traveling teams needs a hotel with (i) internet access and (ii) an on-site restaurant/room service and ideally conference room space. Marriott/Sheraton/Omni/Hyatt is the type of hotel that provides this - they don't pay full price for a group rate. They aren't staying at the Ritz or a Four Seasons, but you can't expect them to stay at the econolodge either.
