Everyone talking college basketball on ESPN these days (especially Pat Forde) is extremely adamant that there's not a "great" team this year, and in his last article Forde went on to say there's no even any "very good" teams.


So do you guys think OSU is a great team? Let's try and be objective here.

I consider a great college basketball team to have a great balance of inside and outside scoring, has someone you can depend on to score when you need points, size and length to play good defense, good point guard play, and good-to-great coaching that won't lead to mental errors from the team.

When I think about who fills that requirement, I consider Duke (when Irving is healthy) and OSU to both be great teams. But yet OSU is getting no love, so apparently they're not a great team.

What say you?

I think they are pretty good, but not so good that they couldn't lose any game. For example, they barely beat Northwestern. They did find a way to win, but it's not like they are so much better than every other team that I know they will win. And they have a pretty tough stretch to finish the season, so we'll find out how good they are.

I think they are as great as any other team in the country. I personally think Texas is the only team that at times has looked better than Ohio State.

They have possibly the National POY and a great core around him mixed with experience and youth. They are exactly what you want in a basketball team, so I think they have the potential of being great (going undefeated, winning a National Championship).

They are a very good team with the possibility of being great. They have one weakness, free throws, that could keep them from being great, but we have seen that they have the ability to knock down their free throws in clutch situations. To be a great team, I believe you have to win the National Championship game. So, time will tell.

Great teams finish off teams at home and steal w's on the road.

OSU at times has stolen games at home (Penn State, Minny) playing decent basketball (not good, not great). This makes me wonder if they have what it takes to be a great team.

Victories at Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Purdue would be a marker of greatness as so few teams could lay claim to winning in those buildings.
Buckeyes can do it, but it will be very difficult. That is why greatness is tough to achieve.

I don't think there are any great teams. I think OSU is a top tier team along with Texas, Kansas, duke, and Pitt.

When they're on their game (like against Purdue), there's no team in the country that can beat them (that including Duke with Irving). The problem is that they tend to go into cold streaks during games, are mediocre at foul shots, and aren't a very deep team (more of a concern for injuries/fouls rather than energy). They are definitely a great team, but great teams don't always win it all. We'll find out a definitive answer in March and hopefully April.

I sure as hell would NOT want to play OSU. That is what signifies greatness, but winning a championship won't silent the haters, people hate OSU because we are simply better than everyone else, and that's never going to change.

Well, first they have to win a title.

But Im with Forde, there are no great teams, and not many VERY good teams either (he did say, with extreme apologies to OSU, or something along those lines right?). Which I agree with also, OSU is the only team that can achieve event that label.

College bball is down, down, down this year. Weak Freshman class is taking its toll...but on the flip side, they may not have nearly as many 1 and dones which will make the coming years even better.

Too early to use the word great. Win the NCAA..then it can be thrown around. There have been teams who many considered great, that have lost in NCAA. As mentioned above...time will tell.

Yep. To be great, you have to have a title, imo.

That means, there arent many great teams at all ever, because really, if you arent a #1 seed who wins, you probably arent great either. Its an elite group, and if OSU gets it done with less than 3 loses, I will have no issue calling them great.

Some of the best teams of all time didnt win the title, and you will never hear me or most people label them great. Unless its "greatest teams to not win a title"

Same here. Regardless of competition, if they WERE to go 35-0 and win it all. Id consider using the great term.

Not a great team....like the 76 Hoosoers,who sent 5 guys to the pros...nor as good as the NCState team of Monte Towe and David Thompson...Tom Burleson. Not nearly as good as the UCLA teams of Jabbar, Wicks, Rowe, Allen and Mike Warren. or the Walton, Wicks, Rowe group.

Not as good as Florida's team that beat us for the national title game a few years back. Not as good as Duke with Jay Williays, Dunleavy and that big dude down low...forget his name.

But....they have a chance to do what no team has done in 35 years...although I would be surprised if they did it.

Kansas was a #1 seed, 30-3 record, and played in the only final four consisting of all #1 seeds. I would consider that team a great team.

They needed OT and a miracle shot to beat a team that was freshman led and shot 62% from the free throw line. The Jayhawks were very good, but not great.

You do realize how loaded Memphis was don't you? You also realize they weren't freshman led don't you?

I think the UNC team with Ellington, Lawson, and Hansbrough was great team. The Tarheels closest tournament score was a 12 point over Oklahoma in the regional final.

Derek Rose was their PG. I believe he was a freshman at the time.CDR is a nice player,but Dosier and Dorsey are forgettable.

Haha now that I look at their roster, they didn't even have another freshman on that team that played other than Rose. They were led by 3 juniors and a senior. Their leading scorer was a junior (CDR).

Hmmm, possible freshman POY, veteran leadership, poor free throw shooting....sounds eeeeerily similar

That was a great team.

HOWEVER, that was one of the worse years in college basketball in terms of talent that I could remember. UNC cake walked to the title that year...granted, they would have won the title in most other years as well, they were loaded.

There is nothing wrong with being labeled as very good. I think the word great should be reserved for truly great teams.
