Hell, $50K is pocket change to MANY successsful people in many careers. Now, $50 K is a lot of money to a garbage collector, what most of those taking the money would end up being if not for their God given abilites. Why prostitute yourself by taking chump change from a pimp when you're 18, instead of being a man and wait 3 years to be a multi-millionaire??
Lack of self-esteem? I don't think so. It's more about what you want now, so I do agree that it has to do with impatience. But as the OP asks, if you would never get caught with 100% certainty, why not take it? A professional contract is never a guarantee until after your college career is over and you have proved yourself. If your services are in demand, why not take from the highest bidder if you hypothetically wouldn't get caught and you knew this? It's not illegal.
Of course realistically speaking, you don't know if you will get caught or not, so I say don't take the money in reality, but for the hypothetical, of course take it. JMO
