Mmmmmmmmmmk. It isn't a coincidence that no one seemed to bring their A game in all 5 playoff games against Mooney--they really are just that good.

Yes I watched the game. Did you? Surely you didn't miss Mooney players trying to strip the ball out every chance they got. They're SMARTER, BETTER football players because of work, preparation and coaching whether any of you want to admit it or not.sebastian wrote: Mooney's kids were taught that if you run at someone and don't hit them, then they would fumble? WOW, that's impressive. Mooney hits weren't what caused the fumbles. Did you watch the game?

Nobody is denying that Mooney is a great team. Why you all get so defensive whenever anyone speaks there opinion about Mooney? LOL Not a knock..just something I noticed and was curious about.

But did you see the fumbles from DeSales when there wasn't anyone from Mooney around? They got go go gadget arms or something?SQ_Crazies wrote: Surely you didn't miss Mooney players trying to strip the ball out every chance they got.

Which means they didn't want to be there? Or it means they made mistakes? Mooney made mistakes too. There has never been a team in the history of football that has played a mistake free game.
And you guys should just all be glad that they don't have all the best players from the Mahoning Valley. They'd just be ever better and then there wouldn't be GREAT programs that constantly put out college talent like:
Ursuline
Harding
JFK
Howland
Poland
Canfield
Hubbard
Girard
Should I continue? There is another team from Youngstown playing in a state title game. Just accept it, Youngstown football takes a backseat to no one--we've known it up here for years.

You wanting a cookie or something? I don't believe anyone said anything negative about 'Youngstown' football.

Then why is it none of the other Youngstown schools do much in football.
Playoffs
State titles
I could be wrong but it seems the two smaller schools are almost always the king of the hill up there.

Well you brought it up..so I'd assume you'd think someone would have said something then. Once again..nobody has said "Youngstown football takes a backseat to Stark County" or any other County. So I guess I'm just trying to figure out...what's ur point?

It just isn't a coincidence that their closest game in the regular season and their toughest playoff game came against two other Mahoning Valley teams. To say they're a Mahoning Valley All-Star team is insane, they could never leave the Valley in the regular season and still be more battle tested than any team in D3.

Great HS football team no doubt...too bad none of their Dads have jobs though.

SQ, you forgot my alma mater Liberty. They've put out their fair share of D1 athletes as well.
And if I recall, we beat a heavily favored #1 ranked Mentor Lake Catholic a few years ago, and were a Chris Harrison torn ACL away from beating Buchtel and giving Steubenville a run for their money.

Great job Cards!
I didn't get to see the game, but I heard the Fox punt was the best play of the season.
And a halfback pass?!? Did they take that page out of the South Catholic 7th grade playbook?
#7 feels great! 15-0 feels great!
Thanks Cards for a special season...and thank you seniors for all the memories!

Good call, Liberty is another one. They churn out more D1 athletes than most schools could ever dream of seeing.

I made my comment in all seriousness. I live in the area and know each year of the players who live in Poland, Boardman, etc. To suggest that all the Mooney players are from Youngstown is a lie. Ditto Ursuline players. I didn't mention "recruiting". Local folks who watch all the programs up here see where the players are from and who they play for. Simple fact. And the other fact is that the team has ALL Star players from various communities, not just Youngstown. To call Mooney a collection of All Star players from Mahoning County is quite correct also.

Mooney, Ursuline, ....Dont have to recruit. Their programs recruit themselves. Quit crying. Its strange that the same publics and same privates are usually good year in and year out. Its the program. Build it ...and they will come. Dont cry about teams that built solid programs with good coaching and good kids who want to be there.

I agree, and that's not pointing fingers to recruiting!Paladin wrote: I made my comment in all seriousness. Successful programs draw in talent!
Mooney gives football players the best opportunity to become successful as an adult!
There is nothing wrong with parents wanting to give their kids ample opportunity!

First of all, congratulations to Cardinal Mooney for winning their 7th state championship. I was a senior when they won their first. I agree with Paladin on where the players come from, but one thing that wasn't mentioned is that these players, at least most of them come from Catholic grade schools (feeder schools) that are in Boardman, Poland, and Youngstown. Most of these players, not all, have gone to Catholic schools all their lives. Some parents want their children to have a Catholic education. If you would like to see what grade school the player went to you can go to Mooneyfootball.com and look at the roster. It is stated there where everyone can see. Congratulations again to the Cards, especially the seniors.

First of all the largest school that is left following consolidation over the past few years is East and they're D2.newarkcatholicfan wrote: Then why is it none of the other Youngstown schools do much in football.

Second, coaching has been a bit lacklustre, Chaney coach retired, Rayen gone, South gone, Wilson gone etc...
The consolidations have hurt programs, a lot of loyalties to coaches that maybe didn't get the job, players not coming together as one unit etc...
They may or may not get together and get going in the right direction, but there's a hangover from consoldating no doubt.

WOW! I missed this one by a mile. I'll admit my prediction was partially wishful thinking (DeSales 21 Mooney 17). Mooney was completely dominating. I was surprised that DeSales didn't have a better showing, a lot of unforced errors, I don't think they brought their A game at all. It would have been nice to see a more closely contested game. Even with DeSales best effort this would have been a lot closer but still a Mooney victory. Congratulations on a great year, you were head and shoulders above all others.

Thanks Ridgerunner for the comments, DeSales had a good year and nothing to hang their heads about. Just wasn't their day. Best of luck in 2010.
