Twelve Iowa football players are recovering after being taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Monday evening with a kidney condition, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported on its website Tuesday.

The Gazette said the Iowa players have Rhabdomyolysis, which is a breakdown of muscle fibers that releases myoglobin into the bloodstream. This can affect the kidneys and be can be caused by excessive exercise.

This corresponds with a posting on the Facebook page of Iowa linebacker Jim Poggi, who wrote he was hospitalized after his urine turned brown.

"The student-athletes were admitted throughout the course of Monday evening," a University of Iowa staff physician said in a statement. "All of the individuals are responding well to treatment as of Tuesday morning. All are in safe and stable condition."

Extremely odd. That condition is common with the prolonged use of statin medications and trauma injuries. However, I never knew it could be developed through too much exercise. Makes sense though.

Iowa's program is certainly keeping things interesting here as of late.

This would be considered an epidemic occurance. Such a large number from the same social group being struck with the same condition at the exact same time. Such an occurance of this condition usually stems from a chemical or biological factor.

Didn't Albert Haynesworth "supposedly" have this?

Albert is to lazy to excercise at all, let alone too hard.

Ferentz is on the road recruiting. I bet the parents he talks to will have some interesting questions regarding his program.

Same thing a dozen or so Oregon HS football players had in the fall? I thought I read that somewhere but can't provide a link.

I thought the same thing....something doesn't add up here, and I've got a feeling there's more to this story than the "excessive exercise" theory

It's surprisingly common, just not as serious as some of the bigger cases such as this or the Oregon HS players

Rhabdo can also be caused by amphetamine use... Not just meth, but medications like Adderall can also cause it. Adderall is heavily abused by college kids trying to stay awake and stay focused to study.

so they had intense workouts, like 100 squats and 100 yd sled push, or 100 squats and 100 bench presses, timed.

combine that with a bad batch of supplements (CREATINE) and presto what a coincidence 12 guys all in the hospital at the same time from the same problem.

of course I'm just taking a wild guess.

12 different players doing the same intense workout WILL NOT have their bodies react to that workout in the exact same way. There were 12 completely different individuals with 12 different body types and muscular groups. It's like finger prints, none are exactly the same. Anyone who has done the same intense workout with a large group knows that. However, all using the same "chemical" before or after that workout WILL cause all 12 athlete's skeletal muscle fibers to break down at the same time. This is an extreme and unusual medical condition.

"Extensive research over the last decade has shown that oral creatine supplementation at a rate of 5 to 20 grams per day appears to be very safe and largely devoid of adverse side-effects [13] while at the same time, effectively improving the physiological response to resistance exercise, increasing the maximal force production of muscles in both men and women"

i would think they would have all the access to information on the correct way to take it from strength coaches/athletic trainers. IF taken correctly, it shouldnt have any negative effects. im not saying, but im just saying
