Saw this earlier. His lawyer is claiming he didn't drop the bar on himself, but rather that it was bumped out of his hands. Interesting.

Then they say that it wasn't properly put in his hands.

I know the last time I benched, no one put the bar in my hands. Might have had a spot to get it off the rack, but no one put the bar in my hands.

I really don't see how they have a case. Unless they want to say no one responded to him or they didn't respond quickly enough. But if I remember correctly, it was because of how quick he made it to the hospital that saved his life....

Yeah this doesn't make sense. It would also take a good blow to the bar to actually knock it out of someones hands. I think the only case they could have is someone not properly spotting him.

I would be shocked if he has a case here. He was benching 275 lbs, which for someone like him I would imagine he could handle pretty comfortably. If he were maxing out, maybe I could see some negligence, but not necessarily in something like this.

I read he was using a "monkey grip" which was instructed by the strength trainer. I could see the bar coming loose using that.

This is kind of what I was thinking. There are too many different things that could have happened.

I assume this is the grip where you don't wrap your thumb around the bar?

This!

When I read that my first thought was, "WTF?! Placing the bar in his hands? I'm sorry, but if you have to have the bar placed in your hands, you shouldn't be weightlifting to begin with."

Is there even a snowball's chance in hell this kid wins this lawsuit?!

It will be interesting to hear how this plays out in court. Was it a voluntary weight lifting session, or mandatory? Was he assigned a lighting partner? What percentage of his max is 275 lbs? How many coaches are required to be present, by the NCAA and University?

I don't know if any of these questions matter in a court of law, but I think that many are important questions that we don't know the answers to.

You'd like to believe the lawyer knows all of this to know if he has a good case or not going in. I would assume he had/has all this info prior to filing.

Obviously the lawyer has this information.

I can remember doing a monkey grip on light lifts (134-145) just to save my grip when the big lifts came. Even if my coach told me to monkey grip that much, I would have told him to money grip his ass hole (not really, but I wouldn't have done it). IF, he was instructed to do so, then he should sue because that's negligence on the coach's part.

And OBVIOUSLY, as I said, I would think with this information, he feels he has a good case. My bet is there will be an out of court settlement.

Bit of a surprise here. But there was speculation that he was leaning towards Oregon going into signing day. There was also something about Kiffin being in trouble with the NCAA(again) while at Tenn. Tenn could get hit as well as Kiffin. Be interesting to see howt his plays out. How anyone could send their kid to play for this snake is beyond me.

it's a grip used by weight lifters...

from Bench Press Essentials:

"Doing a “monkey grip,” with your thumbs on the same side as your fingers increases the odds of the bar suddenly rolling out of your hands, and onto whatever soft, easily crushed flesh that might be below it. So give the boys down at the emergency room a break and always grip the bar with your thumbs."

The only reason he is suing USC is because he needs money. Wasn't he injured badly in an NFL preseason game and is out of football?

If he were on a pro roster, and making millions, we wouldn't be hearing any of this.
