I live in a Columbus-area suburb that is legally within the city limits. However, yesterday afternoon, one of our neighbors received a prolonged visit from a pair of deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. The deputies' vehicle was parked in front of the neighbor's house, Visi-bar flashing, for more than an hour while they (thoroughly) searched one of the family's vehicles which was parked in their driveway. They may have also searched the house - I didn't notice. They removed several small plastic bags from the vehicle and appeared to be field-testing the contents of several of them.

I could not see if they removed anyone from the house - the vehicle was an SUV with tinted glass around the rear seating area, and they had been here for a while before Lady D'Friskies and I noticed them. I know that they didn't arrive with the siren sounding.

We live a long way from any area patrolled by the FCSO - it's not likely that this was the direct result of a traffic stop. Why would they be here? Our guess is that they were executing a warrant?

Seems like it probably has to do with an investigation they were doing.

Are you in Franklin County? If so the Sheriff would have jurisdiction.

The Sheriff would have jurisdiction of whatever county it would be.

?

The Franklin County Sheriff has jurisdiction in any county? That doesn't seem correct.

Well that's what I already said, which is why I was confused that he'd quote me to say what I said.

I live within a city which is (mostly) located within Franklin County - when an officer is needed, I've always seen the local police force in our neighborhood. We had a major SWAT raid two years ago (same house, different tenants), which was led by the local cops as well. I'm wondering why we saw the FCSO deputies here instead of the local heat.

The house involved has been a rental unit in an otherwise owner-occupied area for about five years - with four different tenants in the last four years. Every last one of them has had regular visits from the cops - mostly teenage kids involved in drug crimes and theft to support the habit.

Given the scenario you just presented, it is likely that they were serving a warrant/continuing an investigation though if it was only one car I wouldn't imagine its anything too crazy.

Couldn't it also be(if it was just a "routine" call) just that the Sheriff was closer?

Not on something routine, I don't see them stepping on another PD's toes unless requested. They were there because some investigation led them there.

...sometimes (as in Mahoning County), they have a joint task force with other law enforcement agencies that execute search warrants on individuals in an adjacent county (Trumbull) based on officers envolvment/availablility in a particular case.
