With Votto due 17 million in 2013, the handwriting is on the wall, Reds will be broken up and Votto traded by the start of 2013. They need to draft well and trade for prospects with lots of years before big money can kick in to remain competetive!

Minor leagues do have some very good prospects.....best in years according to reports so maybe they let him go.

They still have Alonso. There have been whispers that he is going to get some PT at 3rd base and in the OF this season. I think they will use him enough over the next year or two to see what kind of player he is/drive up his value, and while doing that I figure they will try and negotiate with Votto. If he is unwilling to re-sign 2 seasons from now, then I think you see them trade him in between 2012 and 2013

They should drive up Alonso's trade value, then trade him to the Sox or Yanks in exchange for them paying Votto's new 5 year 100 million dollar salary in 2013 haha

Joey will be willing to sign at market value, but the Reds won't be able to afford him at market value and won't offer him market value. The classic small market handicap, making it impossible for them to win with established top shelf players whose contract status is "mature". They have to gamble on young players with "possibilities" that can't earn commnensurate with their performance along with a mix of experienced players that are fundamentally good, but whose market value is not "top shelf", and rely on a chemistry and career years happening to win it all every once in a while. The key is to develop an organization that attracts the experienced players who know how to win and will give up a little to be in a situation that can blosssom into a great year. I think Walt knows what he is doing.

Not worthy of its own thread...
ESPNdeportes is reporting that Cueto and the Reds have agreed to a 4 yr, $27 mil contract.

The Reds are now discussing a multi-year deal with Edinson Volquez.
