Are you a knife carrier?
The other day I was at my grandson (3 years old) pre-school to pick him up. Not thinking I reached into my pocket for some money to buy him a coloring book ( book sale to raise money). I pulled out my money and the knife the lady at the counter looked at me in shock. (I think she pee her pants) Note: She was a younger lady I would say 27 year would an older lady 55 year be as shocked to see a man carrying a pocket knife?) I then realized about the knife. I quickly apologized and comment that I always carry a pocket knife from my childhood. I’m not to sure she understood the what was then and what is now ..common place.
Because others at the school know who I am from my kids and now my three other grandkids attending the same school the situation was quickly dropped.
I was thinking all this time my kids where in school, all the sporting events, church events and school actives my kids and I was involved in and I never thought about that knife.
What was once normal is now reason to be paranoid. ..I find this to be sad for our society…
This is what I carry:

Surprised you did not get detained, tried, convicted and executed before you got to the parking lot.

I have usually carried a Gerber knife that my brother got me as a groomsman gift. It usually stays in my car now, I am around schools and flying fairly often to keep carrying it.

Are you sure she wasn't just surprised at your mangling of the English language?

We had a conversation and my pre-eminence of the spoke word is quite superior over that of my written syntax.Bigred1995;638159 wrote:Are you sure she wasn't just surprised at your mangling of the English language?

Generally carry it everywhere up here, but I've started leaving it home when I travel to the lower 48.

Depends on the definition of knife. Using the Crocodile Dundee definition, I don't. But there is a small utility knife/hook on my keyring. I am quite sure this doesn't count as I have been in security buildings where they scanned me and no one batted an eye, with it's powerful 1&1/2 inch blade. When we were young the police told us the knife blade could not be any wider than your hand (advantage if you had a wide hand I guess).
My Dad's generation (he was a carpenter for 40+ years) was quite different. Until just recently, he's in his 80's, I don't think he would have ever went anywhere without his penknife. With this background info I will offer the following story, although from your perspective you may not appreciate it the way I do. Keep in the back of your mind that I seldom use this knife, but it does come in handy and nice to have when I need it. Most of the time I am using it to cut the line on the weedwacker at the ballfield, pop the back off of a watch, or to scrape or clean something. No Jed Clampett whittling or anything.
So a year or so ago I am visiting my dad in the hospital, where unfortunately has been way too often. His sugar and CO2 levels are whacked, he is very compromised, on oxygen 24/7, very frail and in general not in good health. When he is home we are grateful, although he is not in pain and content to do almost nothing all day long. So on this particular day he is soon to be discharged and he says "do you have a penknife on you", and I say "Maybe not by your definition, but try this". He wanted to scrape under his nail that had something under it. So I used a couple alcohol pads and soap and cleaned it up pretty good (it really wasn't that dirty), and Dad, always analyzing things for levelness, plumbness, size, weight, and in this case sharpness, kind of gets a little giggle when he test the blade for sharpness. And then I pulled out this question "Dad, do you know what I use that knife to cut the most often", figuring he would not be able to know about the weedwhacker line. He thinks about it for a second, runs the blade on his finger again, and responds in the ornery way that only a dad can, "Butter?"

General usefulness.
Opening a watch, cutting a tag off something you don't want to rip or break, great beer bottle opener, makeshift screwdriver, etc.
It never makes sense until you carry one. Then, you realize what all can be made easier by carrying one.

I have a nice collection of several case xx and xxx knives. A few of them are high collectable ones. They are all in their cases for preservation. The one I carry all the time is a swiss army boy scout model I got when I was a kid. I still have the tooth pick and the tweezers with it.

I see, I think my grandfather used to carry a knife. But, I have yet to find a purpose for one in my life (at least for everyday use)

Very nice knife.
I carry a Gerber multi-tool but mostly at work.
