The ECOL has added Marietta and Rosecrans as league members, one month after adding Zanesville.

The new ECOL will look like this:

Black Division:
Cambridge
Dover
Marietta
New Philadelphia
Zanesville

White Division:
Claymont
Coshocton
Meadowbrook
River View
Rosecrans

More expansion is anticipated in the future.

Each Division will have a winner. Week 10 will always be Dover/Phila.

Dover to Marietta is 83 miles, that will be a long night on a bus for the away team.

Is this just football or all sports? I would think Rosecrans would struggle against those larger schools in some sports

It was my understanding each large school would play one another annually in football and basketball. The large schools would rotate playing 2 of the small schools each year. There are no scenerios where Rosecrans would ever play Dover, NP. etc...Maybe even rotate just one small per year. I cant see Dover giving up Coshocton, or vice versa.

When Zanesville was added several weeks ago, the Times Recorder stated that divisions will be used in football, volleyball, boys/girls basketball, baseball and softball, with a division champion named in each sport.

Titles for wrestling, swimming, cross country, track, golf and tennis will come via league tournaments.

Hell..that's a short trip for Marietta! Actually..I believe most of the away trips average right around there..some even more.

Rosecrans, Marietta join ECOL

Staff Report

After adding Zanesville earlier this year, the East Central Ohio League has increased to 10 teams with the additions of Rosecrans and Marietta on Wednesday.

The league will split into two divisions for football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, softball and baseball.

Cambridge, Dover, Marietta, New Philadelphia and Zanesville will be grouped into one division, and the other will feature Claymont, Coshocton, River View, Meadowbrook and Rosecrans.

In football, each school will play their four divisional games with one crossover game, while the other five sports will have teams play divisional foes twice with one game against each team in the other division.

There will be one division for soccer and tennis and the ECOL will hold league championships for wrestling, cross country, track and field and swimming.

The ECOL hopes to continue expansion. Any schools interested should contact Commissioner John Neighbor by calling (740) 922-0954 or (330) 934-0240 or e-mail [email protected].

I like what the ECOL is doing. The Black Division should be very competitive in all 3 major boys sports. It will be interesting to see if they can find another "Big" school to add to the Black Division. I am not sure who would be left in this area outside of Tri-Valley, who I can not see leaving the MVL.
Dover/Phila driving to Marietta/Zanesville is really not that bad. I would think the schedule makers will have some sense and try to schedule as many contests between these teams on Fridays and Saturdays as possible. As far as middle school games go, I wouldn't be surprised if these 4 teams don't even play against each other in some sports.

I realize Marietta is a bigger school and all..but really..what does the ECOL have to gain by adding them? Nothing against the Tigers..but it's not like they have been very successful as of late. Just another weak team for Dover and New Philly to beat up on?

I will admit I do not know that much about Marietta but I will venture a guess in order of importance.
1. They are a division 2 team in Eastern Ohio and the league really needed to add at least 1 school to each division.
2. They had an interest in joining the ECOL
3. They already have played Dover, Phila, Cambridge and Zanesville recently so the schools are familiar with each other
4. They seemed competitive in basketball. I am not sure what they are like in baseball (does anyone know the answer to this?) They have the potential because of school size to be more competitive than some of the current schools in the league.

From top to bottom, Marietta has strong sports teams. The strong points are not the big money sports though. Marietta has often won the all-sports trophy in the SEOAL. While they do not dominate in the big money sports, the Tigers have been strong enough to be a top contender for the all-sports trophy in the SEOAL the past 25 years.

Correct..All around..they are a good program..football..not so much..they haven't had a winning season since they went 8-2 in 2002. Since then they are 21-49. Hate to see them leave the league..but it's one less hour and a half drive for us I guess. LOL

This might sound crazy, but a 3-7 Division II league member would be better than playing a 1-9 or 2-8 DIII or DIV opponent every year like Claymont, Meadowbrook and River View have been lately.

Also, do they use Marietta College's facilities for any sports? If not, what are their facilities like for football, basketball and baseball?

Yeah..not familiar with too many of the ECOL teams and who they play.

I do believe they use there football field? I really can't say anything about them outside of football as that is all I really pay attention to.

That was actually my first thought when I heard about it. LOL Liked having them in the league...been there for many years..have been a great part of the SEOAL..but it will let us toughen up our schedule a bit.

What's Logan out league schedule look like? I'd like to see them play Sheridan, a lot of points but no guaranteed win.

Logan's non league schedule the past couple years and next year are against Lancaster, Pickerington North, and Hamilton Township. I doubt we'd ever see a Sheridan/Logan game in the regular season.
