Link 1 shows that Track and field is the 2nd highest participation sport in the US and link 2 shows that more schools in Ohio offer CC then soccer. Alot more runners here in Ohio then soccer players.

Try to know what you are talking about.....especially when you try to talk shit.

No one can be this stupid.
Not to mention that anyone can run cross-country....not everyone can play soccer. It requires skill, physicality and endurance...not just a pair of shoes.

Here are the numbers for cross country in high schools:

Boys -- 231,452
Girls -- 198,199

The link also lists participation numbers for soccer in high schools:

Boys -- 383,824
Girls -- 344,534

US high schools that carry each sport:

Boys XC -- 13,647
Boys soccer -- 11,139
Girls XC -- 13,457
Girls soccer -- 10,548

Ohio only:
Number of schools & participants

Boys XC -- 716...9,654
Boys soccer -- 580...15,610
Girls XC -- 716...8,143
Girls soccer -- 515...13,609

All are taken from an NFHS study. So it appears that soccer does trump cross country in Ohio AND the United States. Soccer is the 5th most participated sport in Ohio for boys high school, cross country is 7th. Soccer is the 5th most participated sport in Ohio for girls high school, cross country is 6th. So cross country is not even close to being the most participated sport in Ohio, let alone the United States -- at the high school level. Here's another link from NFHS that gives the increases that each sport has had -- soccer is second only to T&F (including both genders), cross country comes in third. And the total numbers actually increase in this other link since it is more recent -- still in favor of soccer.

I'm appalled at the lack of respect for civil liberties and diversity on this thread! Soccer is sport in its purest form much like Greco-Roman wrestling. I love watching a sinewy young man weaving his way right up the middle with a ball. I'm new to this whole Ohio Chatter thing but maybe this site isn't as welcome to alternative ideas as I was led to believe.

Lol, you get used to the people that don't like soccer. I enjoy snot and cc and the others on most topics. Just ignore them on soccer threads. Its not to tough. We get quite a bit of great soccer discussion around here.

LOL. Anyone can play soccer. Not everyone can be good at soccer. It's the same for all sports.

Not at the high school level. There is a maximum roster size for OHSAA socce, so most high schools have to cut kids from the team.

No such roster max for cross country, so anyone can 'be on the team'.

Don't worry about it. Most of them are just messing with us just like most of us are messing about cross country being worse. They're both good sports.

There are seven runners on a varsity cross country team. Eight if you include an alternate.

You missed my point.

In larger schools around Central Ohio, there are upwards of 50 - 70 kids on the Cross Country team. While maybe only 8 can score points in a meet, more than that participate and are, thus 'on the team'.

I've never heard of a high school 'cutting' athletes to only the top 8 or 9 runners.

No there isn't. You can dress as many as you want UNTIL the state tournament, when it is limited to 22. Last year I was dressing 28 girls for most matches because we played onyl a partial JV schedule.

Yeah, unless by "cut" you mean put on the JV team then I have to agree with ccrunner here.
