I am being bombarded by calls from this number several times a day (between 2 and 5), and they never call long enough for me to pick up.

I called it back and got a woman saying "Thank you for calling PNC. May I have your 16 digit card number?"

1. Now, I have relatives working for PNC, and I've called and heard them answer enough to know that that is NOT how a PNC employee answers the phone. They say something to the effect of, "Thank you for calling PNC Bank. My name is ____________. How may I make banking easier for you today?"

2. I've been called by PNC in the past, and it was never from that number up until the last 3 days.

3. As far as I can tell, there has been no suspicious activity on my account.

4. Any Juanita, Dick, or Harry could call, leave no message, and when I call back, just say, "Thank you for calling PNC. May I have your 16-digit card number?"


If this IS PNC, their employee (or their new phone support protocol) is retarded. If not, I wanted to know if anyone else is getting these calls.

Also, if you're wondering why I put their number as the subject title, it was so that unscrupulous phone marketers that use web spiders and harvesters to gather phone numbers could find this one easily. :D Hopefully they start receiving unsolicited marketing phone calls.

From what I can tell in a quick Google search, it's PNC calling about collecting on a delinquent credit payment. Probably want to talk to PNC if you have a credit account with them to make sure everything's OK.

yup. seems pretty legit. when i called they told me to have my number ready to expedite the help process.

I work for a bank and we've had the same scam happen.

Do not give any information. The # is just spoofed and sent to a line overseas.

They are also sending text messages to with these types of scams.

FYI A bank will never call you and ask for this information randomly.

I got a weird txt from verizon yesterday asking me to call a 1-800 number and update my billing credit card. I called verizon directly instead and they said the credit card I was using for automatic billing was about to expire and I did need to update it, but I'm still not convinced that txt came from them. (or that the number belonged to them.)

A debt collector won't ask for your credit card/bank account number. They have all of the information they need.

No outstanding debt with them. All cards are 0-balance currently.

Pretty sure texts from Verizon always come from a strange series of numbers.

But I had an unpaid early termination fee from Cingular a long time ago that we forgot to pay and every time the collection agency called they always referenced the Cingular account number.

I would say that if a debt collector is asking for an account number or CC number it is a scam.

One thing is for sure, no legit function of any kind is going to ask for specific account info up front.

Never give any of that...ever

I politely asked if there was some sort of other information I could give to confirm I am who I say I am. Here was her response (made me chuckle):

"Your Social Security Number would work as well."

I wish I knew how to root these people out.

I know how to do it with Email spam solicitations, and when I get them, if it's consistent (and thus worth my time to do it), I'll find the affiliate ID they're using in their links, contact the company (or network) with the product they're selling, and I get their affiliate account shut down.

It's actually kind of fun. :D

I wrote up something earlier and closed my browser.

#1) Collectors will only call if you have a debt (if you don't have a debt, they aren't going to call. That's the #1 sign its a scam.)
#2) Collectors won't ask for your CC# directly unless you instigate the discussion (aka "I'd like to pay with a credit card.)
#3) If you are unsure of the call, ask for an extension to reach them at. Then call your local branch using a number not provided by the caller and verify it with your local branch.

This method is becoming huge plus they are also doing it by text also.

You would be surprised how many people fall for this crap to. The funny thing is, 90% of the time, it's people that already don't have any money.

We contacted the police in our case and the number was forwarded overseas so they had no way to trace it beyond that point and pretty much say it's a dead case at that point.
